Many OpenType fonts contain, amongst other OpenType advance typography features, sets of true small caps. However, Word 2010 and the preview/evaluation versions of Word 2013 do not support these true small caps contained in the fonts - instead, they make their own fake small caps by shrinking normal upper case glyphs. This leads to thinner small caps glyphs, and the result simply looks awful.

Publisher, on the other hand, does support true small caps.

Question 1: does the release version of Word 2013 offer true small caps, or does it, like its predecessors, cheat by shrinking upper case glyphs?

If 'no':

Question 2: why on earth not? Word supports many other advanced OpenType typgography features, such as ligatures, alternates, stylistic sets, old style and proportional numbers - so why leave out support for true small caps? Is there a real, practical, sensible, understandable reason? Or were they simply forgotten? Will they be included in an update (soon)?

This is a note to let you know that I am trying to involve someone familiar with this topic to further look at this issue.

I's still like to know if true small caps:

a) were omitted because no-one thought about it (so why didn't they?),

b) omitted after careful consideration (but why?),

c) included, but something went wrong and it doesn't work?

Even the very latest new version of Word still cannot do true small caps. Pathetic!
