Trying to organize my contacts
Hi. I am a clueless exchange admin at a small business that is trying to transition to a larger eneterprise type. I've recently been looking at creating segmented 'Address Lists', so that users don't have to go through the entire GAL when
looking for a few common email addresses. When I tried to create the new list, I got the error "you can't specify the recipient container because legacy servers are detected". We are currently running EX2010 SP2, however, I also have an EX2007
SP2 server in our environment (STRICTLY to support a legacy EMC email archiving software that we are in the midst of trying to phase out). All our mailboxes, and distribution groups sit on the EX2010 server. Since I was the one that migrated from
2003 to 2007 to 2010, I remember having to do some 'upgrading of recipient policies' (is that correct?), but don't remember the details. Here are all our address policies from the powershell command:
[PS] C:\Windows\system32>Get-EmailAddressPolicy | Format-List Name,*RecipientFilter*,ExchangeVersion
Name : Default Policy
RecipientFilter : Alias -ne $null
LdapRecipientFilter : (mailNickname=*)
LastUpdatedRecipientFilter :
RecipientFilterApplied : False
RecipientFilterType : Precanned
ExchangeVersion : 0.1 (8.0.535.0)
Name : <domainname>.com
RecipientFilter :
LdapRecipientFilter : (&(&(& (mailnickname=*) (| (&(objectCategory=person)(objectClass=user)(!(homeMDB=*))(!(msE
xchHomeServerName=*)))(&(objectCategory=person)(objectClass=user)(homeMDB=CN=Grand Cayman
Store,CN=First Storage Group,CN=InformationStore,CN=MAIL02,CN=Servers,CN=ntsuperserver,CN=
Administrative Groups,CN=Image Photo Services,CN=Microsoft Exchange,CN=Services,CN=Configu
ration,DC=imageservices,DC=com))(&(objectCategory=person)(objectClass=contact))(objectCate
gory=group)(objectCategory=publicFolder)(objectCategory=msExchDynamicDistributionList) )))
)
LastUpdatedRecipientFilter :
RecipientFilterApplied : False
RecipientFilterType : Legacy
ExchangeVersion : 0.0 (6.5.6500.0)
Name : ntsuperserver
RecipientFilter :
LdapRecipientFilter : (&(mailNickname=*)(legacyExchangeDN=/O=Image Photo Services/OU=ntsuperserver/*))
LastUpdatedRecipientFilter :
RecipientFilterApplied : False
RecipientFilterType : Legacy
ExchangeVersion : 0.0 (6.5.6500.0)
To be honest, I don't know what <domainname>.com or ntsuperserver are doing or why they exist. I do know they have been around since 2003. Is this what is causing my problem? Can someone point me in the right direction so I can create
some segmented address lists for my users?

"Since you do have a legaycy server in your ORG (Exchange 2007), you can't create Address Lists and specify a recipient container."
I'll take that as literally as possible. I changed my methodology for the population of the address book and selected another filter type (namely 'Department'). Worked for me. Thanks.
I will delete <domainname>.com. I created as an experiment back in the 2003 days, I believe. I guess its lingered since. Last question: What about ntsuperserver? How do I know if that isn't being used? I think that
actually stems from the Exchange 2000 days. Since none of us are genius exchange admins here, we kind of just let things be in an 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' sense. However, if I can clean this up, that'd be great. Thanks again!
