Two Edge Exchange 2010 SP1 servers in DMZ what about failover
Hello,
I want to install 2 edge Exchange 2010 Sp1 servers into a DMZ. Will these servers have an automatically failover; or do I have to setup 2 edge synch's to cas/hub on the intranet and have DNS balanced record to use both edges ?
Are there some document's explaining the pro/cons on having 2 edge servers in a DMZ and what to take into considerations ?
Regards
Peter

You will need to subscribe both Edge servers for the Hub Transport servers to use them.

Although personally I fail to see the point in Edge servers anyway... waste of an Exchange licence. I can achieve about 90% of the functionality with third party products for a lot less than than the cost of an Exchange licence (and the missing 10% of features
I don't care about).

“Deploying more than one Edge Transport server provides redundancy and failover capabilities for your inbound message flow. You can load-balance
SMTP traffic to your organization between Edge Transport servers by defining more than one mail exchange (MX) resource record with the same priority in the Domain Name System (DNS) database for your mail domain”
----------Refer to <Overview
of the Edge Transport Server Role>
“The Edge Transport server automatically load balances inbound SMTP traffic to all Hub Transport servers in the Active Directory site
to which the Edge Transport server is subscribed”
----------Refer to <Understanding
High Availability and Site Resilience >
The new feature in exchange 2010SP1, “Shadow
Redundancy Promotion” will also help to protect the messages in transit
Notes: It’s disabled by default
