Unable to Remove Exchange
Hi - we're trying to remove Exchange 2003 from our old server. We had just added a new Exchange server to our organization and followed the MS article on transitioning (all those weird public folders, mailboxes, offline address book, etc). Of course, the last step in the article is to remove Exchange from the old server, but it's saying there are still mailboxes on that server. In Exchange system manager, it only shows the System Mailbox there. What should we do? Thanks! Peter J. Squicciarini Quo Vadis LLC

Follow the steps in this KB:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/279202Method 3 or 4 is probably the easiest. This typically happens when you have created a mailbox and it was never logged onto, so it doesnt show in ESM.

One thing that people frequently forget to to is to move the Administrator's mailbox. If a mailbox has never received any e-mail or never been opened, then it will not appear in the Mailboxes list in Exchange System Manager. What I usually do is to add the mailbox database as a column in Active Directory Users and Computers, the go through each of the OUs that contain users and sort by that column. That is the quick and dirty way to do locate the mailbox. You could also perform a Find in ADUC and search for the old mailbox database name, but you do need the DN of the database to do that. Sorry, pressed Submit before I was finished. Amit answered a similar question about a year ago and he has an example of how you can search for and find mailboxes on that server using ADUC.http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/exchangesvrgeneral/thread/baa9ae5b-7d6f-4877-bf73-f436073c8b64Worst case, you can just delete the mailbox database using ADSIEDIT. Of course, you should only do that after you have exhausted all other possibilities.Jim McBee - Blog - http://mostlyexchange.blogspot.com
