Unable to receive mail..
I have recently loaded SBS 2003 at home and am in the process of setting it up. Actually, about 2 days ago I had it up and running. Now I can not seem to receive email. I can send and receive it internally and I can send it out externally. I have been searching this site and read up on everything I can. At first I thought it was an issue with a MX file on my DNS site for my web address. But I went to DNSstuff and ran my DNS lookup report and here it is:http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/dnsreport.ch?domain=www.tsncbolt.comSo it shows pretty much everything is great OTHER than not being able to actually make a connection to the mail server. I wanted to make sure I had the port open on the firewall so I ran the telnet command at the cmd prompt oftelnet mail.tsncbolt.com 25And it did not give me a connection error. As I stated it WAS working just the other day with mail going both in and out and I do not know what has changed. ANY assistance would be GREATLY appreciated and I will be more than willing to answer any questions. Thanks, Chris...

Hi, A couple of things needs to be ready in order to receive mails - it appears that you have already cobered some of the items: 1.) MX record (you should also have a PTR record) must be created 2.) Firewall needs to allow SMTP traffic from the internet to and fromthe internet 3.) A recipient policy must include the smtp domain name and users must be stamped with such an address. Leif

Do I create the PTR record on the Exchange server or is that done through my DNS site, like the MX record. I have port 25 open on my Comcast gateway/firewall. I have even taken the server and placed it in the DMZ for testing purposes and still had no inbound email. I will check the recipient policy when I get home. I seem to remember looking at the default SMTP connector this morning that there was a check mark by something to do with the recipient list. It also does not appear that the port is binding when I run a netstat -an command. When it was working the other day I could run the netstat -an comand and see that the TCP portion of port 25 was bound to my internal server ip of 10.1.10.15 I defiently appeciate your response and I will check it out once at home.

The PTR record should be created the same place as your MX record - the people hosting your external DNS. Leif

Well I do have a PTR file evidently in place.. I checked with DNSStuff and the reverse DNS lookup tool.http://private.dnsstuff.com/tools/ptr.ch?ip=24.131.36.220&token=249046e63d162c5c2635818023291019It is really weird, everything seems to be configured proeperly with exception of receiving email. If it was a service I would think that it would not send email. And even though the firewall port 25 is open it is like the Server is not binding to it. I am at a loss.

Hi, You don't have anything else listening on port 25 (antivirus software etc). Leif

Well I ran netstat -an and it would appear that nothing is actually using the port.

Hi, Can you telnet to port 25 from the intranet? If no you need to look at the exchange server - look for events in the application log during start-up and check the status of the smtp virtuel server. Leif
