Unable to rename sections in OneNote 2010 stored on SkyDrive

I'm having the same problem as other people have described in different forums :

My OneNote 2010 notebooks are stored on SkyDrive, but I am unable to rename sections. When my local changes are synched with the server, the names are changed back to the old one (usually "New Section 1, 2, 3, etc"). The same thing happens when I edit the notebooks in the browser and rename the sections - as soon as I open up the notebooks locally the names are changed back!

Does anyone know how to fix this annoying bug - it seems like a minor issue that should have solved a long time ago?

My notebooks only have a few sections and a few pages, I don't have a lot of files stored on SkyDrive and the file names of my notebooks are short and consistent. I'm running Windows XP (SP3) and IE8.

Hi,

First, try to reset IE settings.

================

1.       Start Internet Explorer.

2.       On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.

3.       On the Advanced tab, click Reset.

4.       In the Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box, click Reset to confirm.

You may also disable the add-ins to see if the problem can be resolved.

Press and hold the CTRL key, and then click OneNote to start.

Best Regards,

Hi Sally and thank you for your reply!

I've reset the Internet Explorer Settings, as suggested, and do not have any add-ins enabled. As a matter of fact I have a clean copy of IE8 installed on my computer (for regular browsing I normally use Firefox). This, however, did not change anything - when I rename sections they revert back to the old name as soon as the notebook is synced with the server. Another weird thing is that sections that I have deleted come back when the notebook is synced with the server.

Within a section everything works fine. I am able to rename pages and add content.

Once again, thank you for taking the time to answer - if you have any further ideas on what may cause the problem I would be grateful to hear them!

Hi,

In this thread: http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/addonenote/thread/0f7cb404-5f6e-4537-b814-6ce17351d3d7  , jeffhubb_ said:

Sometimes you can fix it by doing these operations carefully and separately.  Make sure no one else is using the notebook.  You can force the notebook to sync with SkyDrive by pressing Shift+F9.  Do this once to make sure it's stable - be sure that the green icon on the notebook name disappears and all you see is a globe.  Then do one file-operation (such as rename), and Shift+F9 again.  Repeat this process for each file you're trying to move/rename/delete, and don't edit any pages in-between.

Hello Sally,

It doesn't matter if I force sync or wait for the automatic sync, nor does it matter if I only rename one section and do nothing else. jeffhub_'s suggestion to solution doesn't work for me.

Does Microsoft know what causes this problem?

I am having exactly the same problem, I have started a new note book and still have the same issues- I cant move sections, delete sections or rename them. I can however create new ones and add to old ones. I have tried all things above, and also created a copy of the notebook, deleted the old one, made the changes and resynched. This meant I was able to delete and rename the sections- BUT I was again unable to make any further changes to existing section names and positions after the first synch.

This is actually a really annoying bug, some help would be really appreciated.

I too am having this very same problem. This happens with sections and with section groups. This is really annoying and is preventing me from working effectively with this product. Our workgroup is looking to adopt this tool for use within the group but are blocked by this issue. Please address this ASAP!!!! Is Microsoft aware of this issue? Do we have a timeline as to when it will be addressed? There is no news on this since Novemeber of last year? Come on, Microsoft! You can do better than this!

I am also having this issue - seems like we are going to get no answer to this problem.

I am having EXACTLY the same issue.  Whenever I try to rename a Section in my Notebook (stored on Skydrive), the section automatically reverts back to "New Section 1"....   I REALLY like OneNote, but THIS issue is AGGRAVATING in an otherwise wonderful product!

I was having the exact issue you describe.

Try uninstalling the Windows Live Sign-In Assistant application.  You'll need to go to Add/Remove programs.  After I uninstalled, my issue was completely fixed and my workbooks still automatically sync with the SkyDrive version.  I'm not even sure what that Assistant app is really doing.

I hope that that works!

Unfortunately, uninstalling Windows Live Sign-In Assistant did not solve my problem. I still have the exaxt same issue: whenever I sync my notebook (stored on SkyDrive), all section names revert to default - i.e. 'New Section 1', 'New Section 2', etc. This issue is very annoying and has resulted in me not using OneNote 2010 at all.

I find it difficult to believe that Microsoft still hasn't been able to solve this issue!

Ok - I was having the same issue - i think it IS a bug - but i finally found a way around it.

I changed my shared notebook synchronization to work offline

then i create the section - move the pages from the sections that wouldn't rename -

deleted those sections

then i set it to synch automatically again - and it left my sections alone...

So long story short - before adding a section - move to work offline - get your section built and renamed - then start sync again.

The following worked for me.

0. Open the web browser and go to skydrive web site.

1. Sign in to SkyDrive account. I used FireFox.

2. Browse to the OneNote file.

3. Click on the file and the browser would open it for editing it online. You will see the the sections listed on your left. Right click and delete the note book you want to delete (Unfiled 1) and Rename the section you want to rename

4. Now log out from skydrive by click the logout link on the top within the browser.

5. Close/Exit web browser

6. Open the OneNote 2010 from the Start -> Programs... You will see it will get synced up correctly.

[If it works give me a thumbs up]

I was having this same issue, and resolved it by doing an MS Office Repair.  In Win 7, Steps: Control Panel, Programs and Features, find MS Office Professional 2010, Change, Repair.
