Upgrade from Exchange 2000 to 2003 with New Hardware
We currently have our mail server setup on a windows 2000 server SP4 with Exchange server 2000. We are looking to upgrade this setup to a new Windows 2003 Server with Exchange Server 2003. This machine is used only for mail, the Domain Controller is on another box and is Server 2003. I am trying to determine the best course of action, whether to upgrade the 2000 server to 2003 then attempt a migration to the new box, or to install exchange 2000 on the new server and try an upgrade? Perhaps my best option would just be a clean install and attempt to move mailbox content and public folders. I am wondering if anyone has any experience in this particulart type of upgrade or knows of a specific white paper or article. Thanks.

Hi, From my experience, there is only one sensible option. Install Windows 2003 on the new server and patch fully. Then install Exchange 2003 on the box putting it in the same org as the Exchange 2000 box. Then migrate the mailboxes and public folders across. This will give you the cleanest system going forward. Take a look here for details: http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/Migrating-Exchange2000-Exchange-2003-Hardware.html Cheers Nathan
