User changed from mail enabled to mailbox user
Hello,
I have just moved a user onto our Exchange 2003 server. Prior to this
we had a mail enabled user configured to forward mail to his external
address. His mrimary address was n...@other.com and the secondary was
name@exchange_server.com.
We have now updated this user so he has his own mailbox, so the
primary address is name@exchange..... and the secondary is
name@.......
The external server other.com has been configured to forward mail to
his Exchange address.
The problem is that when somebody sends an email to this user it uses
the cached address in Outlook which bounces.
Should I remove the secondary address so mail addressed to
n...@other.com. Mail sent to this address would then be routed to
exchange from the other.com server. Would this resolve the bounce
issue? It's going to be big problem for me to get users to clear the
cache address.
Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated.

Before mail-disabling the user, record the value of his legacyExchangeDN attribute (you can use ADSIEdit to find it).
When mailbox-enabling the user add that value as a new "Other" e-mail address of type X500 (no dot).
It is a bit of a shame that there's no built-in function to convert a user from mail-enabled to mailbox-enabled or vice-versa and preserve all the e-mail attirbutes.Ed Crowley MVP "There are seldom good technological solutions to behavioral problems."

Thanks Ed, would this be a custom address in Exchange 2003 with a mail type of X500?

Yes, it would. You can construct the X500 address from the NDR
received by the sender.
