User intermittently getting bounces for mails sent as shared mailbox
Exchange 2003 Since Monday, a user has been intermittently been getting bounced emails when he sends as a shared mailbox (in outlook and in an application). The bounce says: You do not have permission to send to this recipient. For assistance, contact your system administrator. the strange thing is that all of the emails with the bounce are actually delivered to the recipient. (All recipients are internal). I have turned up logging for SMTP, Send As and NDR, but no NDR is ever logged on the server. Message tracking is not helpful, it shows: report delivered to <username>. Send as shows the user sending the message as the shared mailbox, so that seems normal. Not sure where to go further on this perplexing issue. The only other thing I can add is that the Exchange server was rebooted this past weekend as MS security updates for October were installed on it.

Does the application has a mailbox. ? IS the application sending the maill ? ... or is it the user , if the application is sending the mail internally w/o a mailbox it may bounce back. Check the SMTP logs from the mail from the application..

It happens both if we try via the application and via Outlook (the users has permissions to the shared mailbox and has it as an additional mailbox in outlook). Its been working for years in this configuration, and has been having issues only in the past few days for him.

This error seems to be getting worse. I now have more reports of users getting this same bounce message now. Anyone know if there is any diag logging setting I can turn up higher to diagnose this?

Hi eChange, It sounds odd, which update do you patch the server, how about remove it and make a test? Per your description, the smtp log seems good. And do you check again the permission for the shared mailbox. Reboot the server and make a test. And I want to verify that, do you have multiple smtp address for one user account, which one is the primary. How about create new one shared mailbox and make a test. If it is urgent, I would sugget you open a ticket. Regards! Gavin

Hi eChange, Is the update 931832? And the reason is: All new versions of the Exchange Information Store will now explicitly require the Send As permission in order to send e-mail messages as the mailbox owner. However, the following lists the three exceptions to this requirement: • The mailbox owner account does not require explicit Send As permission for its own mailbox. • The Associated External Account for a mailbox does not require explicit Send As permission. • A delegate account that also has the Full Mailbox Access permission does not require explicit Send As permission Regards!
