Using Exchange 2003 as a relay server
HelloAt the moment, we have many applications that need to send SMTP mail for application notifications, alerts, reporting etc.We have a set up where the application sends to a dedicated IIS relay server, which then forwards the mail on.SMTP connections to this IIS relay server are locked down by IP address to prevent it being used as an open relay. We are investigating using a dedicated Exchange server instead of IIS for this relay functionality.Does anyone have any knowledge about using Exchange 2003 as this sort of relay (it would locked down by IP as well)...would it be better or worse than using IIS? And doesn't Exchange 2003 use IIS SMTP anyway? Does anything change in Exchange 2007?All servers run Windows 2003 Server.

Why are you considering doingthis? Do you already have an Exchange organization? If not, then usingExchange for something this simple isn't very cost-effective.>And doesn't Exchange 2003 use IIS SMTP anyway? It does, but it also adds to the abilities of the barebones IIS SMTPservice. Whether you'd actually _need_ those 'extras' for an internalSMTP relay is doubtful.>Does anything change in Exchange 2007?Yes.
