Using RSG on alternate server to recover database
Does anybody have the steps for recovering a database to a recovery storage group on an alternate server. For example, I have two Exchange 2007 servers named EXCH01 (production)and EXCH02 (test) that are in the same Exchange organization. I would like to take a backup of a database from EXCH01 and restore it to a RSG on EXCH02 so that I can recover a mailbox. I have read lot's of documentation about using it on the same server but very little and nothing with specific steps about recovering to an alternate server. Thanks for you help.Jim

You launch the Exchange Troubleshooting assistentunder the Toolbox work center in the EMC on the Mailbox server on which you want to mountthe database to the recovery storage group. On one of the first pages in the wizard you specify the Mailbox server and storage group for which you want to recovera mailbox database. After that simply follow the steps in the following article, in which I provide the steps necessary in order to recover an Exchange 2007mailbox database:http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/Working-Recovery-Storage-Groups-Exchange-2007.htmlHenrik Walther Exchange MVP | MCM: E2K7 | MCITP: EMA/EA | MCSE: M+S - MSExchange.org

By selecting the source server and corresponding storage group it would attempt to put the RSG files on the source server. If I wanted to avoid touching the source server (production) I could simply change the RSG logfile and database path to the test server that I'm adding the RSG on and nothing on the production server would be touched correct?

Henriks article is very good.If you want to read a description with the RSG on an alternate server then you can check out page 407 ofhttp://www.amazon.com/Designing-Storage-Exchange-Digital-Technologies/dp/1555583083.I used the RSG on an alternate server in the dial tone recovery section.

And the rest of the book is definitely a good read. All you ever want to learn about storage design etc. is included in this book. A lot of content that you cannot find at places like TechNet.Henrik Walther Exchange MVP | MCM: E2K7 | MCITP: EMA/EA | MCSE: M+S - MSExchange.org
