Virtualising Exchange 2007 Mailbox servers
Hello All,We are currently running Exchange 2003 SP2 and are looking to move to Exchange 2007 SP1.One of the possibilities is running virtualised Windows 2008 servers that would be running the Mailbox server role.Does anyone have any experience/ points worth discussing regarding this?Am eager to hear from anyone! Thanks

Yes, that's supported by Microsoft these days as long as the virtualisation technology is under SVVP (seehttp://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2008/08/19/449621.aspx)It works fine but you will need to test your design for performance. We have some customers who have virtualised their mailbox server roles whilst others have chosen to keep those physical but virtualise the other roles such as Hub and CAS. Testing is vital here.Neil Hobson, Exchange MVP

We have customers running in similar configurations on Citrix XenServer / Vmware / and Hyper V. All basically configure the same way.I was able to build out the last environment with 8 x Servers 2 x Edge / 2 x Hub / 2 x Cas and 2 x MBX using the guideance provided.http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc785447.aspx- Automated Build. One thing to really watch is the Disk I/O on an over utilized Virtual Host Server (IE Vmware ESX). I have found undesireable results with a couple of customers in this config. I have made suggestions that have improved performance by adding a dedicated SAN Shelf for SQL and Exchange.ThanksDave KawulaPrincipal Consultant TriCon Technical Services Inc.
