I can access my office email and read, open attachments & even address a new email. However, I am unable to write in the message body. On both a new message & a reply there is an "x" in the upper left corner of the message area.
What can I do?

seems your browser is incompatible. Wich browser are you using?

Thank you. That link helped. Our office has Exchange 2003 which is not supported with the new Explorer 9 browser.
