What is the result of renaming Exchange Account because user moved to new department
Hello, We are new to Exchange 2007 and we have our first situation where a user has been in Exchange as "UserA" and now he is moving to a new department and needs his user ID changed to "UserB". I want to know if I change his ID in Active Directory will that change his Exchange Account alias to match and all his email, calendar and notes get moved to the new ID as well. Also, is this the proper method by which I shoudl be change the account and if not what is the proper method. Appreciate any help. Capt.

If I might just inject my own personal curiousity here, why in the world are you tying the user ID to a particular department? That seems like a lot of unnecessary admin overhead. That being said, if you rename the account name in Active Directory Users and Computers, the account will continue to own the mailbox (e-mail, calendar, contacts, etc...), but the Exchange alias will not change. You will need to do that yourself using the Exchange Management Console.

Jim, Sorry for the confusion, but it was like this before I started. Everyone is assigned an ID based on the departments they are located in. If that user moves to a different department, then they are by policy forced to change their user ID to match the prefix assigned to that department. If I an "UserA-JJ" for IS Department and I move to Accouting Department, my id must change to "UserA-BB" to match the departments special prefix. I wish it was not the case, but like I said this was in place before I got here. I hope that answers that part of your question. Now if Irename "UserA-AA" to "UserA-BB" in AD User and Comptuers then you say I need to also rename the Alias account "UserA-AA" to "UserA-BB" in Exchange Management Console. That seems like there is some disconnect somewhere. When I create a new user in Exchange I grab the user ID "UserA-AA" and then it creates the mailbox and assigns the Alias as "UserA-AA".Not sure why then I need to cahgne it in 2 places to make it work? Also, If I do change it in both places to match up...i.e. "UserA-BB" no data will be lost correct? Thanks for your help Capt.
