When will Microsoft stop discriminating other software other than itself?
I think Microsoft(MS)'s products are great. There are many softwares with great features but out there, we have a lot of smart people and companies that make software too. I selected MS Exchange and installed it since version 5.5. I just upgraded to Exchange 2007 and have a few thoughts: -Exchange 2007 is great, many new and cool features but the most annoying things is cross-platform access. I have hard time to explain to users who are usingcomputer other than MS OS PC. The Outlook Web Access (OWA) is much improved but for people who are not using MS Internet Exprorer (MSIE), they only can accessmessage, calendar and Contacts. People who are using MSIE can do all things like the full Outlook client: checking public folders, change view in calendar, access remote documents, expand email folders list, drag-and-drop etc... -Mobile web access: the OMA in Exchange 2003 for mobile web user is gone and people who used this before are out of luck. This forces them either to change their device or use IMAP. But that come with extra cost for example Verizon have Web browsing service for $5/mo but for full data service (for IMAP or direct push to work) it's $30/mo. -Direct push: luckily MS promotes its direct push so it shares this to other companies to develope their softwarebecause its competition with BlackBerry. However most Windows mobile devices are not doing good with its power management so these devices drain the battery fairly fast. Also there is no update for Direct pushto work onolder mobile version 5.0. MS released Exchange 2007 for quite some time now but on market, there are few devices other than device that running Windows mobile 6 supports direct push.so MS, if you are going maintream with your softwares, you must accept the existence of other companies that make software too and be open-mind about it. I think users wouldbenefit morefrom manyproduct base on your technology. Before you release your software, you should work to have all client on different platforms have the same access. Otherwise this is a discrimination to other software and this tactic will backfire. I don't think it is a big deal toinvest money for a few engineers to work on a client for each platform only if you don't want to do it.
