Which notification should I get for sending limit?
Hi all,
Exchange 2003 SP2
If I enable the sending message size's maximum size(KB) 10,240KB in messge delivery of global settings, what kind of notification users should get when they try to send messages size larger than 10,240 KB? I am confused as I tested on two different
servers and got two following different notifications.
1) undeliverable notification
From: System Administrator
Sent: Tuesday, February 22, 2011 9:32 PM
To: test user
Subject: Undeliverable: Delivery Status Notification (Failure)
Undeliverable: Delivery Status Notification (Failure)
Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.
Subject: test
The following recipient(s) cannot be reached:
Test user on 2/22/2011 9:32 PM
This message is larger than the current system limit or the recipient's mailbox is full.
Create a shorter message body or remove attachments and try sending it again.
<mail.local #5.2.3>
2) "message size exceeds outgoing message size limit" notification when they try to send larger than 10MB in outlook.
So, which one should it be the right notification?

1 one is vallid NDR which generate error code :5.2.3
Numeric Code: 5.2.3
Possible Cause: The message is too large for the local quota. For example, a remote Exchange user may have delivery restrictions set with max incoming message size.
Troubleshooting: Resend the message without attachments, or set the server side limit or the client side limit to permit a larger message size.Anil

Thanks and do you know why I get two different notifications? (same verison on OS and Exchange servers)

Hi,
Were the same sender and recipient when you did the test in the two servers?
I think the first NDR indicates that the recipient mailbox cannot receive the larger email, and the second NRD means that the sender cannot send the larger email. So you should check the limit of the
sender and the recipient first.
