Word 2013: Sorry, something went wrong and Word was unable to start. (24)
Hi,

When I open Outlook (not web, but the win app), click new mail, attach file and click a Word document, I get this error on several Win 7 Pc's:

"Sorry, something went wrong and Word was unable to start. (24)"

I've tried starting the computer in clean mode (msconfig.exe and disable all non-microsoft), reboot and use FixIt to remove Office 365 and the install it again .... still the same problem.

Any idea?

Thanks

Normally, when attach file to email won't require to start the application which is set to open the file. I mean, in this instance, Word shouldn't be "called" during this process.

Or, do you have the Preview Pane enabled in Windows?

If yes,

  1. do you have problem start Word directly from your desktop?
  2. do you have problem when open Word documents directly from your desktop?
If yes, see How to troubleshoot problems that occur when you start or use Word

If no,

Try download and use the Process Monitor, see if we can capture more details about this issue.

I am experiencing this error when attempting to upload Office documents to a SharePoint site. It seems to have something to do with the Document Previewer.

  • If I click a Word document, I get the "Sorry, something went wrong...(24)" error. (The error does not occur if Windows Explorer preview pane is disabled).
  • If I click an Excel spreadsheet, I get "Not enough memory to run Microsoft Excel". (The error occurs whether Windows Explorer preview pane is enabled or disabled)
  • PowerPoint gives me "There's not enough memory or system resources to start PowerPoint" (the error does not occur if Windows Explorer preview pane is disabled)

My PC is running Windows 7 Enterprise, IE 10 and Office 2013 Professional Plus.

Get same problem from this morning. When I attach a .txt file, IE becomes not responding. I don't see error messages on Chrome, but I still cannot attach file. When I try to use Mail application in Windows 8, the email keeps staying in Outbox, then there's a message "There's a problem with sending the message...".

However, my the other Live Mail does not have any problem with attaching or sending email.

Too easy! I had the same messages & after reading all of these posts, somewhere I read Microsoft Silverlight....

Go to Control panel >uninstall a programme >select >Microsoft Silverlight.... UNINSTALL IT NOW!

Then go to Microsoft Silverlight page (Google it) Download and re-install Silverlight 5....

I know you are all going to think (after a quick check) "Hey bro I already have Silverlight 5, why re-install it?"

....BECAUSE ITS BROKEN!....from another programme you installed after it and the other programme took a byte from Silverlight....

If you try to install it over the same version you have now.... IT WILL NOT RE-INSTALL! A message will pop up and tell you that you already have it, the new Clean Silverlight file from Microsoft WILL NOT overwrite the existing Silverlight on your PC.... YOU NEED TO DELETE ANY SILVERLIGHT FILES ON YOUR SYSTEM NO MATTER WHAT VERSION THEY ARE.... DELETE THEM!

When that space on your hard drive has been cleared of your corrupted Silverlight file THE NEW ONE WILL EMBED ITSELF INTACT!

Re-load your Browser Only & Presto...... IT WORKS woooooohoo!

Some PC's may require a re-boot. I am running Windows 7, Microsoft Office 2013 & Outlook....

I use Outlook from my Work though & it loads into browser (both browsers would not attach files until the re-install)

Just checked them and it all works fine n dandy.... :)

Hope this saves many of you as it just did me, as there was so much information on this thread that had absolutely nothing to do with this simple problem, in this whole thread 1 word tweaked me and that was Silverlight! But I don't even know if I'm back in the same forum haha as I cant find "Silverlight" when I googled there were many forums & threads on this problem.... If it works for ya's could a few of you gatecrash the other forums and give everyone the Heads UP..... thanks a Quad trillion :)

Hey look at my post under this....
July 27th, 2014 3:47am

Lajaaacque, WOO HOO!! Your solution of UNINSTALL/REINSTALL of Silverlight 5 worked perfectly to get rid of WORD 2013's recurring message "Sorry, something went wrong and Word was unable to start. (24)" every time I tried to attach a Word file to something.

The other solutions proposed that Windows Explorer Preview Pane being turned on were erroneous-that wasn't turned on on my computer and I still got the "Sorry, something went wrong..." message.

THANK YOU!

I don't have Microsoft Silverlight installed, but I am still having this issue.

Should I install it, or ?

March 5th, 2015 2:42pm

I installed Silverlight and I am still having this issue.

It results from trying to view a Word document in the preview pane, or whenever I attach a Word doc to an email.

What is going on!?!?

Your reinstall of Silverlight was what fixed the issue for me.  My user was clicking a document link inside Sharepoint 2013, it would go to launch the Word document, then kick that error.  Removed Silverlight, then installed it again, documents were opening successfully.  Thank you for the suggestion, would have never thought Silverlight was being used.
