badmail and journaling
I am running Exchange 2003 and recently enabled the badmail folder due to an issue I was having with Symantec Mail Security. This is my backend server, and I have Journaling enabled. My badmail folder is growing very fast. Most of thebad mail is for my Journal mailbox(see below). We use GFI to archive all mail from the journal mailbox.I am not sure why I am receiving this for only the journal mailbox. Is this by design or a config problem? This message is a delivery status notification that cannot be delivered.journal@mydomain.com

Hi, As my understand, that badmail folder is full filling with journaled message, is that true? Id like to know how did you enable journaling, just using GFI MailArchive or enabling it on Exchange Server. Before we moving on, Id like to explain that the Bad Mail folder is where undeliverable messages that cannot be returned to the sender are stored. For example, SMTP receives a message which cannot be resolved. In this case the message would be bounced back as an NDR. However, if the From address also cannot be resolved then the NDR itself is undeliverable. In this case that message would be placed in the Bad Mail folder as a text file so that the Administrator can check them later. Items in the Bad Mail folder are not processed any further by Exchange. So please try to check the original NDR. Besides, we can follow the steps below to automatically delete messages from the badmail folder. How to automatically delete messages from the Badmail folder in Exchange Server 2003 and in Exchange 2000 Server http://support.microsoft.com/kb/867642 Regards, Xiu

I enabled jounaling on the Exchange server only. GFI uses IMAP to download messages from the Journal mailbox. I know the badmail folder is where messages that can't be delivered are stored, but what I can't figure out is why 99.9% of them are related to the journal mailbox. I believe it generates a badmail for every mail that gets sent to the Journal mailbox. Note: I am not having any issues with the journal mailbox.
