best practices guidance for file locations on hub transport/client access server
I'm about to build a new hub transport and client access server for our Exchange 2007 installation. We have a perimeter antispam appliance, so we're not using edge transport servers. We're using a CCR mailbox server, which is already up and running. Windows 2008 x64 as the server OS for everything. The new hub transport/client access server is attached to an FC storage array, and can have a practically limitless number of disk volumes presented to it. I want to provision these to spread out the queue database, logs, text logs, et cetera, for maximum performance. It is also our corporate preference and practice to segregate different types of files into different directories as well, e.g. separate databases from their transaction logs, even if they can co-exist on the same volume. Our installation is modest (150 users, with an average of 100 messages/user/day), but we'd rather err on the side of over-design than have to change things later. Is there any guidance, from MS or others, on how to split up the Exchange files for best performance? I've seen numerous articles on moving the transport database, but we also want to move text logs as well.

Hi,HT Server:- Move the queue database and log from system drive to different LUNs (even better, move queue DB & logs to different LUNs).Managing the Queue Databasehttp://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa996006.aspx- Other logs (SMTP, connectivity etc...) on different LUN.Exchange Server 2007: How many logs hath thee?http://exchangepedia.com/blog/2007/11/exchange-server-2007-how-many-logs-hath.html- Change the database cache as per new guidance.New maximum database cache size guidance for Exchange 2007 Hub Transport Server rolehttp://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2008/05/14/448890.aspxMailbox Server:- Keep only one Mailbox Database per Storage Group.- Each DBs & Transaction logs on different LUNs.- RAID 10 preferred over RAID5 for Database and Logs for better performance.- Control the DB size (.edb file size) maximum to 100GB (for CCR/SCR/LCR 200GB) for faster recovery.- Plan number of mailboxes and mailbox quota considering long term plan as per below article.Mailbox Server Storage Design http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb738147.aspxAmit Tank | MVP - Exchange | MCITP:EMA MCSA:M | http://ExchangeShare.WordPress.com
