I am running windows 2008 AD in mixed mode. I want to reitre the windows 2003 dc that was a gc. I am having problems getting exchange 2007 to point to windows2008 dc that also has the gc. the exchange server is pointing to the windows 2008 only for dns. any help would be great.

The ADTopology Service should detect the new GC.If you are going to take down the old one I would make sure the new servers are up and set at GCs.I would then wait abotu 30 mins, then remove the GC from the 03 server. There is some great info here: http://www.it-freedomconsulting.com/Exchange_2007_Blog_3Q67.htmlBP

Hi,1. First please ensure that all the AD related roles has been all transfer to the new DC/GC.2. Please ensure that the new DC/GC has replicated all the informations from theold one.3. Try to turn off the old one,and then monitor if Exchange can work normally.3. Once everything is running, you could then go ahead and run dcpromo to demote the DC and remove it from the domain.More information to share with you:How to replace single domain controller in domain with a single domain controller?http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555549Exchange Active Directory Provider could not find an available domain controller in the domainhttp://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb218301.aspxRegards,Xiu

Eddie,I am agree with Xiu completly and remember you may want to restart your exchange server if ADtopology goes get the information about the new DC in the ORG, we mayneed to rerun PrepareAD and PreparedDomain once again.Arun Kumar | MCSE - 2K3 + Messaging | ITIL-F V3

I don't think that PrepareAD or PrepareDomain will be required, restarting the ADTopology should pick up the changes in the AD.

First thing I would check is, 2080 event id in application log on Exchange 2007 server and make sure that it is detecting Windows 2008 DC/GC (also make sure that 2008 DC is not RODC because it is not supported with Exchange server), you can post full event detail here to troubleshoot more... Second thing, make sure that Static DC/GC is not configured on Exchange server to point only old DC/GC withGet-ExchangeServer -Status |FLcmdlet... Also you need to reboot new DC/GC when you build new once it is fully replicated and promoted as DC/GC. Amit Tank | MVP - Exchange | MCITP:EMA MCSA:M | http://ExchangeShare.WordPress.com
