eDiscovery

2012R2

I just created an in place discovery based on a keyword, I then exported it to a .pst.

I noticed today that some of the emails cannot be opened, "This item cannot be displayed in the reading Pane, Open item to read its content"

So I ran the same query but got the same results so I thought maybe those emails were encrypted so I delegated myself rights to the mailbox and now I can open those emails just fine, no encryption.

Any idea why the .pst file has random emails that will not open yet can be opened directly from the mailbox?

I can preview the email just fine using the eDiscovery tool but once it gets to the .pst and can't view everything.

Sounds like PST corruption of some sort, so with that said;

  1. Have you tried exporting those same items to PST via Outlook to and then attempting to open?
  2. If that works without issue then whats your patch level on the server, could be a bug that may be resolved by getting updated...

Yes, it does sound like the .pst however I've made 3 now and they all allow some and not others (each trial was the same results)

I even used the PST repair utility on the .pst which found no problems.

Yes, I can open the .pst, how else would I know? Just can't open some of the emails.

Server(s) (Because I tried it from different servers) patch level is 15.0 (Build 913.22) on all 3

OK perhaps we disconnected on point # 2

  • Did you try exporting these same items via Outlook or only via the exchange cmdlets?
  • if ONLY the cmdlets I would suggest trying to export them via Outlook to see if the issue persist and report back
  • I see that the error states it cannot be shown in the reading pane and to open it to see the contents so what happens when you try to double click to open the item?  does it open or does it give you a new error or?
  • What version of Outlook are you using to open the PST?
  • What is the size of the PST

Regarding the CU level appears your on CU5 and CU8 is the latest http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/15776.exchange-server-2013-and-cumulative-updates-cus-build-numbers-en-us.aspx however updating may or may note resolve the issue so please provide the additional information above first

Not sure I'm following you.

I used 2013 on-premise Exchange Admin Center

Compliance Management > in-place eDiscovery & hold

New query based on keyword > Can Preview all content

When I export to .pst I can not view all content.

I have tried this with MS Outlook 2010 and 2013

PST is only 192,465 KB

We block exporting >PST files from MS Outlook so I'd have to modify a few things to even try that but ideally, I'd just like the eDiscovery export tool to work :-)

So I realize you want to use the eDiscovery export tool, however what I am trying to ascertain is IF this is an issue with the actual CONTENT or the Export mechanism.

1. The message you provided complained about not being able to view the contents in the reading pane, correct?  if so

  • Can you actually open the message and see the contents or does it give you a new message because the message provided would seem to only impact viewing it via the reading pane
  • You also seemed to imply that you could view the item within its original location via Outlook by adding rights to that users mailbox, correct?   If yes then are you able to view it via the reading pane as well as opening it completely?

2. Depending upon your answers to the above the next logical action would be to manually export that item to PST via Outlook to see if the issue persists.

  • If it persists then we know its something with the data that the PST format doesn't like
  • If it doesn't then we know its something with the export mechanism and next step would be to patch all your servers to see if the issue is resolved

ok, I have the mailbox PST

I open the PST in MS Outlook v 15

I can view everything.

I export to a PST using filtering.

Now I cannot view all content, only some.

So, this is happening in Exchange and in MS Outlook

  1. so you say that "I have the mailbox PST, I open the PST in MS Outlook v 15 and  can view everything"
  2.  Where did the above PST come from?
  3. Then your exporting some of the content of the PST referenced in # 1 and now that PST has some items that are unreadable?

I exported it from Exchange

when filtered (with Exchange or MS Outlook) - I can see all the emails just not all the content, can't open everything, see error above.

not filtered - I can see all content

So are you saying that...

1. If you export the ENTIRE mailbox that holds these items to PST you can then view ALL contents without issue

2. However if you do a filtered export of the that same mailbox to PST that the same contents you can view view the unfiltered export without issue is now not viewable?
