event ID 8197 on Exchange 2007
We have a native Exchange 2007 sp1 rollup1 environment with 5 ccr clusters. Until recently, we did not have any public folder databases in our environment. We added one public folder database to one of the ccr clusters last week for the sole purpose of supporting blackberry enterprise server (unfortunately, BES still requires public folders). As soon as we added the public folder database, we started seeing event ID 8197 on all of the active cluster nodes EXCEPT on the node where the public folder database resides. The event occurs every 25 minutes in the app log.The text of the error message is this:Event Type: ErrorEvent Source: MSExchangeFBPublishEvent Category: General Event ID: 8197Date: 5/13/2008Time: 10:00:40 AMUser: N/AComputer: Server01Description:Error initializing session for virtual machine mbx01. The error number is 0x80040111. Make sure Microsoft Exchange Store is running. Also, make sure that there is a valid public folder database on the Exchange server. For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.I've seen a lot of posts with this event ID, but they all have to do with Exchange 2003, not 2007. Also, there seems to be a slight difference between 8197 on e2k7 vs. e2k3--there is one additional sentence at the end of the event that says "make sure that there is a valid public folder database on the Exchange server."Any idea why this error is showing up on clustered mailbox servers and what we can do about it?Thanks.Aaron

Hi Aaron,
My first thought when I saw this error was that the Mailbox DB's don't have a PF DB assigned to them. Go to the properties of each Mailbox DB and check the Client Settings tab to see if a public folder is defined, if not then browse to it and see if it fixes the errors.
Thanks

Thanks for the reply, Will. I checked each database and yes, the public folder is correctly configured on each and every mailbox DB.

Then the next thing I would look at is to see if the Free/Busy PF's were actually created, open the Exchange Management Shell and run "Get-PublicFolder Identity "\NON_IPM_SUBTREE\SCHEDULE+FREEBUSY" Recurse". You should seefolders listed as "\NON_IPM_SUBTREE\SCHEDULE+ FREE BUSY". If receive an error then you'll need to create them. If you download the document for the Microsoft Transporter Suite it has a section that will show you how to create the needed folders.
Thanks

After running the command as suggested (Get-PublicFolder Identity "\NON_IPM_SUBTREE\SCHEDULE+FREEBUSY" Recurse), the following two folders were listed:\NON_IPM_SUBTREE\SCHEDULE+ FREE BUSY\NON_IPM_SUBTREE\SCHEDULE+ FREE BUSY\EX:/o=LDS-EXCH/ou=Exchange Administrative Group (FYDIBOHF23SPDLT)Looks good to me. Keep in mind, the clustered mailbox server on which the public folder database was created does not get event id 8197. The event only occurs on the mailbox servers that don't have a public folder database.

Aaron,
Have you been able to resolve this yet? I am working on the exact same scenario.

No, not yet. We're still stumped. I will be sure to post the solution here when we find it.

OK, I have a Case in at Microsoft as well. What ever we come up with I will post here.

John--it looks like simply moving the cluster to the passive node and then back again fixes this. At least, at first glance that seems to have fixed it for us.

Interesting, It will move one set of resources to see if it stops on that paticular cluster.

So far so good but perhaps just restarting the system attendant is what did it.

Restarting the Exchange System Attendant is enough. You do not have to fail the resources over.

Hi,I have the same issue and restarting the MSExchange System Attendant service did not resolve the issue for me. This error message usually appears together with the MSExchange System Attendant Mailbox Event 4001 (Transient failure has occurred). We're on Exchange 2007 running on Win2008 server. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.jason
