I have a situation where I need to take a server off-line long enough to rebuild and need help with the process. Here is what I have and I am new at this so bear with me: I have a 2 site environment, each located in 2 physically different cities. The main site has two servers running server 2003 enterprise, one of which is a DC and the other is running exchange 2003. The second location is running server 2000, is a DC and is also running exchange 2003. It's a small site and was limited to a single server. The 2000 server was infected with a non-cleanable virus and needs rebuilt. I do not want to chance something going wrong and would like to introduce a second server temporarily to offload printers, files and mailboxes, take the first off-line, rebuild and then reintroduce it back into the network and take the temporary one off-line again. Is this a doable process and if so, is there any good readings on excatly how to do so? Thank you, Eric H

Eric, What you could do is install an extra Exchange server in your organization in the small office. You should be 100% sure that all settings who are configured on the "old" server will be transfered to the new one. After that you should remove Exchange 2003 from the old server to remove it from the Exchange organization. Hi Ehouser, If you can build a new Exchange server/DC and add it into the existing Exchange Organization, all you will need to do is use the Exchange System manager or AD Users and Computers snap-in, to move all the mailboxes to the new Storage Group on thenew Exchange server. I would suggest building a separate DC from your Exchange server if that's possible. Use a desktop PC if you have to, but never install Exchange on a DC if possible. Once you move the mailboxes and everything else, all you'll have to do is remove the Exchange Server from the Org, which means delete it from the Exchange System Manager, and then run DC Promo to remove AD from it, thereby decomissioning it from being a domain Controller. Once you have removed AD and Exchange from the server, then you can safely delete it from AD and recondition the server from scratch. Good Luck! Marcus
