exchange 2007 migration question
Recently, we have been testing our exchange migration in our VM environment. we have stumbled upon a few problems that seem to have relatively cryptic answers. Here are my questions:1. An EDGE transport server is not needed. We understand that. Currently we have an SMTP gateway from a third party that does all of our antivirus, etc... Our deployment would be exchange2007 on the inside, and our SMTP gateway on the DMZ. So, the question is how do you configure the SMTP connector in the HUB to send and recieve mail through ourthird partySMTP gateway wihtout allowing relaying? I am confused about the allowing all option with the * wildcard. 2. When installing our exchange 2007 using TYPICAL setup, everything works great (minus the internal and external send/rcv due to above question). However, we noticed that the STORE on the EXCHANGE 2003 server shows dismounted. WE can still access our email with our outlook clients (again in our testbed) as well as through the CAS server set up for OWA. Shutting down the exchange 2003 server cause all mail to be unavailable. Can someone shed light on this for me?Thank you in advace.

#1. Refer below guide to setup external mail flow through smart host...
How to Configure Internet Mail Flow Through Exchange Hosted Services or an External SMTP Gateway

#2. Do you have mailboxes on Exchange 2003 server or on 2007? You can access mailboxes if those are on Exchange 2007. When you shut down Exchange 2003, it shouldn't stop mails going from one 2007 mailbox to another 2007 mailbox, only mails between 2003 and 2007 server stops in unreachable destination queue.Amit Tank | MVP Exchange Server | MCITP: EMA | MCSA: M | http://ExchangeShare.WordPress.com

HI,
Here basic steps to configure mail flow between SMTP gateway and Hub servers.
1) Create Send Connector on your Internal HUB transport Server to SMTP gateway
2) Create Receive connector on hub transport server to receive emails from SMTP gateway.
3) Configure your SMTP gateway to route emails to HUB servers and receive email from HUB server

2) If server running where your mailboxes host, you can send and receive emails. In your case if mailboxes reside on Exchange 2007 you will be able to send and receive emails
