exchange 2007 storage - edb files
Hello, my storage group is pointed to D:\exchange\first group, where the file "Mailbox Database.edb" stays in size 23,866,256KB for almost 2 months. (Just notice this point). I suppose edb includes mailboxes information, so it should increase at least week by week, but nothing happened in recent 2 months. Does anyone know why and where are the mailbox information saved on earth? thanks a lot. Regards, Lili

You only have one mailbox in the mailbox database?
Please perform the steps below to verify the status of mailbox database:
a. Run Eseutil /d against database for a offline defragment
b. Run Isinteg against the problematic database to check the integrity
Local path \bin\isinteg.exe -s <servername> -test alltests > isinteg_test.txt (KB 182081)
Notes: After completed the steps above, check the size of the database and the event in the application log
Additional, please also run ExBPA against the exchange server

Hi, James and Chinthaka, There are lot more users, I just put one user there as example, the rest is in the same format. the server is working fine right now. I am curious about that problem.. this server is productive, I would like to make sure that the running of Eseutil and Isinteg will not change anything, thanks a lot. Regards, Lily

I just run the following command to check each user's mailbox size, and add them together manually, the total size should be over 27GB,but my edb file is still less than 24GB. Get-MailboxStatistics | Sort-Object TotalItemSize -Descending | ft DisplayName,@{label="TotalItemSize(MB)";expression={$_.TotalItemSize.Value.ToMB()}},ItemCount I am not quite familiar with Eseutil, it seems that the database needs to be dismount to run it, is this true? thanks!

Yes, the database needs to be dismounted for the tools

HI, If you don't have high availability, all receive messages will be queue in the Hub transport queue and Users cannot access their mailbox where reside in that DatabaseRegardsChinthaka
June 30th, 2009 5:37am
We need to schedule a non-productive time for the tools. Users wont be able to access their mailbox during the dismount period, a window will jump out when attempting to open the outlook: Cannot open your default e-mail folders. Microsoft Exchange is not available
Is there no error info in the result of the health check of ExBPA?

Hi, James, thanks for the follow up. i just ran ExBPA, there is some errors, but no critical error, I guess that is fine, right?
June 30th, 2009 8:08am
Well, it depends on the details of those errors. Could you post error info at here?

ya, sure, the only thing is it is in chinese, the error is regarding the size of the log file, now it is 16MB, recommended to 40MB. the exchange server is global catalog server. not recommended to use it.

Hi, Is there any other way to check it, without database dismount? Thank you. Regards, Lily

Well, we can check the event 1221 that generated during the daily online maintenance for the database, see if theres any error info in it
And another method would be, to create a new mailbox database and move all mailboxes into the new one. After the move mailbox, we can safely delete the old database

hi, James, all the 1221 event is ok, with information "after depfragment, there are 300MB space available for first mailbox group", things like that, the size changed a lot. today, it shows there are 45MB space available for first mailbox group. the available size now is fewer and fewer, is it problem? the mailbox group located in disk D, which had plenty of space actually. thanks. HI,As said james, I would suggest to create new storage group and New mailbox database in new partition available more disk space then move all mailboxes to newly created DatabaseRegardsChinthaka

I will think about it, thanks. I just checked again, it shows the size of edb file is now 23,931,791. increased acound 70MB. The modified date shows July 1st. It seems that the size of edb file actually changed, but not frequent enough as expected.

The changed size isnt a problem. When data in the store has been removed, the size of EDB file wont reduce, those free size will be waiting for filling in. And when the new data arrives into the EDB, they will take the available space
