exchange 2007 transition into child domain
Hello. We have an existing Windows 2003 domain (test.com.au). Due to DNS complexities, we've had to create a child domain (child1.test.com.au) and prepare to move all users, groups and computers to it. We've decided to use Windows 2008 domain controllers in the new child domain and would like to move from Exchange 2003 in the root domain to an Exchange 2007 CCR in the child domain. Has anyone been through this process? Can anyone provide some advice on the best way to get to this design? Thanks in advance, Andrew

Dear customer: Yes, you can install Windows Server 2008 domain controll in the child domain and install Exchange server 2007 CCR in the child domain. If you are running the release to manufacturing (RTM) version of Exchange 2007 Setup.com, in each domain (including child domains) where you have the Exchange Enterprise Servers and Exchange Domains Servers security groups and therefore must run Setup /PrepareLegacyExchangePermissions, you must have at least one domain controller that is running Windows Server 2003 SP1 or a later version. For more information about How to Prepare Active Directory and Domains, please refer to the following article: How to Prepare Active Directory and Domains http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb125224(EXCHG.80).aspx However we cant directly transfer Exchange server 2003 to Exchange server 2007 CCR, after you install Exchange server 2007 mailbox role, you can move the mailboxes and public folder on Exchange server 2003 to Exchange server 2007 CCR cluster. For more information about how to move mailbox between a forest, you can refer to the following article: How to Move a Mailbox Within a Single Forest http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997961(EXCHG.80).aspx In Exchange server 2007, CCR cluster is only applicable to mailbox server role. CCR and public folder replication are two very different forms of replication built into Exchange. Due to interoperability limitations between continuous replication and public folder replication, if more than one Mailbox server in the Exchange organization has a public folder database, public folder replication is enabled and public folder databases should not be hosted in CCR environments. For more information about Cluster Continuous Replication and Public Folder Databases, please refer to the following article: Cluster Continuous Replication and Public Folder Databases http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb123996(EXCHG.80).aspx Hope it helps. Okay. I've successfully setup new Windows 2008 domain controllersandan Exchange 2007 CCR in the new child domain. How do I migrate user mailboxes from the root domain to the child domain? Do I have to use ADMT to move the user to the new domain before I can move their mailboxes? I can't seem to find how to do this. I can create a new user in the new domain and create a mailbox for that user. Mail flow between the root Exchange 2003 server and the Exchange 2007 works fine. Thanks, Andrew

Dear customer: Thanks for your reply. You can use ADMT v3 to migrate users, groups, and computers from Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 domains to Active Directory directory service domains; between Active Directory domains in different forests (interforest migration); and between Active Directory domains in the same forest (intraforest migration). ADMT v3 also performs security translation from Windows NT 4.0 domains to Active Directory domains and between Active Directory domains in different forests. After you migrate user, you can use move-mailbox cmd-let to move mailbox according to the previous post. For more information about ADMT tool, please refer to the following articles: Active Directory Migration Tool v3.0 http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=6f86937b-533a-466d-a8e8-aff85ad3d212 ADMT v3 Migration Guide http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=D99EF770-3BBB-4B9E-A8BC-01E9F7EF7342&displaylang=en Hope it helps. It all depends on your design and implementation needs. You could move the user + mailbox to the child domain or move only the mailbox and leave the user in the parent domain. In either case the mailbox migration must be performed from the E2K7 server. Intra-Forest migrations are supported both in the Exchange Management Console (GUI) and the Exchange Management Shell. As an example, to move all existing mailboxes to a db in E2K7 using the shell you could do: get-mailbox | move-mailbox -TargetDatabase <e2k7server\storage group\database>
