Hi,
Front-end server is known as a Client Access Server in Exchange 2007 and it handles non-MAPI requests from clients like OWA, POP3, IMAP, Outlook Anywhere, ActiveSync, Availability service, and Autodiscover services while MAPI request (Outlook) directly goes to Mailbox server.
Hub Transport server is responsible for routing emails in Exchange organization.

Hub transport servers areautomatically load balanced in an Active Directory site so no need to configure anything after installing it but for CAS servers, you need to configure NLB (Network Load Balancing) cluster. You can check below articles written by Henrik to configure NLB cluster on your new servers (Ex01 and Ex02) with CAS & Hub Transport roles.

In Exchange 2007, the tasks of Front-end is done by two servers, HUB transport server, which takes care of mail transport part and CAS server which takes care of Access part(OWA, Outlook Anywhere etc).Ex03 is going to be your Mailbox server, so install Mailbox server role in it.Ex01 & Ex02 are going to take front-end server tasks of Exchange 2003, so they can either have CAS and HUB on individual servers or on both of them. The advantage of having both the roles in Ex01 and 02 is that you get redundancy in case one server fails, while your mailflow(both internal and external) will still work and your mailbox access too.Do not put the HUB for internal mailflow as there is a builtin load balancing mechanism for internal mail flow in case of multiple HUB servers.+Ravi

Hi,No, you can just remove Hub & CAS server roles from Ex03 server. Refer below article while removing individual roles (Hub Transport role removal is bit tricky).
How to uninstall Exchange Server 2007 and individual server roleshttp://searchexchange.techtarget.com/generic/0,,sid43_gci1281195,00.htmlTo configure normal Exchange deployment with Redundancy & High Availability we need minimum 4 servers. 2 serversfor Clustered Mailbox server roles (either CCR or SCC type of clustering) and two for CAS+HUBon NLB cluster because...- You CAN NOT put any other roles on Clustered Mailbox server roles.- You CAN put Hub Transport server roles on CAS - NLB cluster servers.High Availabilityhttp://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124721.aspxAmit Tank || MVP - Exchange || MCITP - Exchange 2007 || http://ExchangeShare.WordPress.com

Ok, let's come from generic view to particular Hub transport server role. You can remove Hub transport server from Ex03 and move it to NLB CAS servers because it is supported in Exchange 2007 SP1 but don't configure internal routing distribution of mail through NLB.Below article will make you more clear on the deployment options of Hub.Deployment Options for Hub Transport Servershttp://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124398.aspxNetwork Load Balance for HUB & CAS - Exchange 2007http://exchangeserverinfo.com/2008/03/20/network-load-balance-for-hub--cas--exchange-2007.aspxAmit Tank || MVP - Exchange || MCITP - Exchange 2007 || http://ExchangeShare.WordPress.com
