i am using exchange 2003 stranded sever , and my hdd having 2 partition 1st partion( OS) is total space is 15 GB and free space is 6GB, and the second partition is the database partition with the total space of 121GB and having only 28GB free space. My data base file is 76 GB and i am planning to do offline defragmentation. any one can help me to do this, i m not very much familer with this. my database parrtiton free space is only 28GB so , can i use temporarily external HDD i will appreciate if any one can give Step by step answer .. thanks - vinu

Section 2 in this link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/192185 gives you the exact syntax (no point me pasting it!) for using the /t switch so that you can do the defrag on that temporary external drive. What does the event id 1221 say about free space in your information store? If you only have single-digits of GB free then there probably isnt much to be gained. Exchange adds up the EDB and STM and then subtracts the amount of free space inside the database to give you a store size. Just because your database file is 76GB in size does not mean that you have broken the 75GB limit. Check that out before you attempt the defrag. Other option we can copy the database to different server where we have enough free space to run the defrag of the database. How to run eseutil on non exchange server http://support.microsoft.com/kb/244525 Once the defrag is completed we can move the database back to exchange server and then mount the database Regards Yeshwanth
