howto route email internally and externally
I'm running exhange 2007 64-bit.I've setup my exchange as exchange.local and the public domain is xyz.com. all the emails in the exchange have aliases abc@xyz.comso when a user sends an email 123@xyz.com to abc@xyz.com the routes internally which mskes sense but at the same I want this email to hit actual mailbox hoasted outaside the exchange. It does work for any other domain except the mapped domain.thanks in advance.

In a nutshell, and if I understand correctly, Exchange accepts mail (from the internet) for xyz.com, soxyz.com should be added to the accepted-domains list. Set type to external relay domain (Exchange is not responsible for xyz.com, so don't make it authoritative).Exchange should be responsible for exchange.local, so exchange.local should be included in the accepted domains list as type authoritative.Make sure you create a connector for the xyz.com namespace and set the smart host to the external mail server hosting the mailboxes.More info on accepted domains:http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124423.aspxInfo on send connectors:http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa998814.aspx

Thanks Michel, you are almost correct except I didn't mention one more thing. This exchange is configured to receive or published for this domain e.g. abc.com and we have put email forwarder for specific accounts. So if an email comes to 123@xyz.com it will be forwarded to 123@abc.com . Within the local exchange all the user accounts on xyz.com have an alias for abc.com i.e. 123@xyz.com has an alias for 123@abc.com .in the accepted domain what does TRUE and FALSE stands for.

If you've configured addresses on the mail-enabled object for which Exchange is not-authoritative and you have configured an SMTP connector (either directly to the smart host or by using DNS resolution, whatever is required) this should work. True or false .. what do you mean?

TRUE means it is responsible for accepting mail for abc.com see below how to configure your exchange server to accept emails for more than one domains. I hope abc.com has MX record and it is already pointing to your existing exchange server. Vinod, if you read properly, Exchange isn't authoritative for the abc.com domain, only for the xyz.com.

yes it authorative for xyz.com not for abc but in the send connector abc.com connector it configured as internal relay. and default email policy is anyone@abc.com instead of xyz.comwhen i try to delete abc.com connetor it gives the error that it is cnfigured for a proxy template and thus can't be deleted. Do I need to change email aliases from abc.com back xyz.com and then delete the internal relay (abc.com) so next time whoever sends the email to 123@abc.com should deliver to local mailbox as well actual mailbox which is hosted outside the domain. Delivring to the local mailbox is not important but should push the email to external hosted abc.comthanks.

I mean Accepted Domain not the send connector.

You should remove the domain from any e-mail address policies first before removing it as an accepted domain. As I read it, you're stamping users with an @abc.com address; remove that and use the authoritative xyz.com. abc.com is a domain out of the exchange organisation, you should add forwarding to <user>@abc.com for <user>@xyz.com, define abc.com as an external relay (so Exchange will accept those addresses) and define the send connector to the smart host for abc.com.Michel de Rooij, MCITP Ent.Msg | MCTS W2008, E2k7Conf | MCSE+Msg2k3 | MCSE+Inet2k3 | Prince2 Fnd | ITIL

I've found an alternate becuase i can't remove it becuase we have emails running all the time.I've created the Mail Contact for every user id and configured the forwarder on each of them.

That works but isnt a long-term solution and is labor intensive. Are you planning to make changes during non-business hours? Michel de Rooij, MCITP Ent.Msg | MCTS W2008, E2k7Conf | MCSE+Msg2k3 | MCSE+Inet2k3 | Prince2 Fnd | ITIL http://twitter.com/mderooij

Yes it very labor intensive. I can work on it on non-working hours.Orhow can I change the default domain policy from everyone@abc.com to everyone@abc.net and it then automatically all the email aliases are changed. Then i can delete the abc.com from everyone's account. As abc.com is being hosted externally.

To stamp e-mail addresses onto objects use an E-mail Address Policy, see http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2006/11/16/431531.aspx You need to alter the primary (i.e. from abc.com to abc.net) when appropriate.Michel de Rooij, MCITP Ent.Msg | MCTS W2008, E2k7Conf | MCSE+Msg2k3 | MCSE+Inet2k3 | Prince2 Fnd | ITIL http://twitter.com/mderooij
