I have a bunch of users who are receiving a "your roaming profile is unavailable. you will logon with local profile" error message. I have found that the problem was a permissions issue on the users profile folder. i have since adjusted it and the users can get a roaming profile now. the issue i am having is that the users have been using the local profile for so long that any changes made to their accounts are no longer there. also, my biggest issue is that Outlook is setup to use cached mode in the case of no network connectivity. now the users are stating that there are items that were in their inbox that are no longer there. i have tried synchronizing their mailboxes but it does not pull the files they are claiming are not there. when using local profile and outlook cached mode, is it possible to have mail moved around between folders and then when you get the roaming profile back, they revert to the server setting thus annulling any and/or changes made within outlook? the user has a large .ost file in the local settings folder (about 1GB). when the user gets the roaming profiles back, does the .ost replicate anything to the server or is it only a one way transfer. this makes sense but im trying to figure out why there would be files in the inbox when offline and not when back online. when restoring users to using roaming profiles, what should be my plan of action to ensure that no data is lost, especially within outlook? your help is appreciated

all im really interested in is when a user uses theyre roaming profile, then the network goes down, they then use the local profile. the user is using cached mode for outlook, he has mail in his inbox. when the network comes back up, he gets a corrupt profile error "your roaming profile is unavailable". i reset the permissions and delete the ntuser.dat and ntuser.dat.log files. he can now logon successfully however, the mail in his inbox has disappeared. any reason why? a fix would be appreciated too! i have run the scanost and scanpst.exe files and they discovered errors. it repaired the errors but did not replace the mail in the inbox. he has all the other files just not the ones from the inbox. has the roaming profile reconnecting synchronized the offline cached mode .ost file and removed the mail from the inbox? why would it do this if no changes were made to the online files?

atm, the .ost files are located on the local pc within the local profile. its not the standard practice here. we have taken over a new system and after moving their roaming profiles to our servers users complained that some mail was missing. i am lead to believe that .ost replicate from the exchange server anyway, and as such it would not matter if they were corrupted/deleted, right? what is the replication time between .ost files and the server? it would make sense if the roaming profile failed, updated the .ost locally, then when the roaming profile was up again, the files would be lost. this all occurring on the same day. thanks for your help guys!
