logs not clearing with circular logging enabled
We have a 2007 exchange server that used to be replicated. Noticed that the log files were not clearing after full backups, so enabled circular logging, still not clearing even after database dismount, restart information store, vssadmin writers
all stable. Nothing in event viewer, Not sure where to go from there.

Hi,
Is the server still a part of CCR? If yes, what you have enabled is Continuous Replication Circular Logging. IN CCRL the logs will not be overwritten till they are copied, replayed to the passive node.
You can check the status by running the following command:
Get-MailboxDatabaseCopyStatus <identity> or run
Get-MailboxDatabaseCopyStatus <identity> | select name,copyqueuelength,replayqueuelength

Hi,
I already thought of that, and CRCL is not running on any of the databases, so that can't be it. I'm thinking there may be a tie somewhere in Active Directory for the old replication mail server, but I'm not sure where to look for it.

Apologies but I'm struggling to understand whether the mailbox server is clustered in a CCR Environment at the moment? Was there another replication partner replaced with a new one?
Is there any replication errors? Could you run Test-ReplicationHealth, check eventlog?

Yes, did all that. Continuous logging is not enabled, and there is nothing in the even logs, which is why I'm kind of stumped. This server used to be part of a replication cluster, but we've since removed the secondary replication server.
I'm not sure if this server ever was clearing the logs at all, I just noticed it when I was poking around, and now I'm wondering if I'm going to have to build a new database and move the mailboxes over to it. I've tried several things with no success.

Were you using a third party backup appplication? If yes, try with Windows NT backup to see if the log files can be cleared.
If not, verify the application log and the backup log to see if there is any error recorded.

I would prefer to give a try using Windows server backup. It came default with windows severs & see if that works. check once with your backup vendor. If there is any release or update creating this behavior. Meanwhile if its daily incremental backup.

If the logs are orphaned (i.e. a full backup failed to delete them for some reason), then they won't get deleted be any future full backup, and I don't think circular logging will delete them either. There's an article here that I hope still applies, but
it might just be easier to see if they look like 'old' ones, i.e. a continuous block of file names that doesn't follow the same sequence as the later ones. Or just check the creation dates.

It might also be worth moving the log file location, and see if they get left behind. If you suspect that they _are_ orphaned, you may need to delete them manually, otherwise they'll hang around forever.Mobile OWA For Smartphone
