on this server there are several hundreads mailboxes.
the client would like to migrate all the exchange data, mailboxes, public folders etc.., to another server by keeping the same version of Exchange.

Hi
Of course you can do that if you don't want do run the latest version..
Install a new server, install exchange on it and move over things nice and smooth :) Move mailboxes and don't forget to replicate the public folder structure.
Move offline addressbook etc
Do you have any special concerns or questions?

This is an easy task. You can install a new Exchange server in the same Org and move mailboxes to that server. After the mailbox move, the outlook will automatically change the server name to the new one. Keep the old exchange server up and running until you complete the migration process. Please follow these instructions on the following KB article to complete this task including clean-up:

Hi
If you install the new server into the existing organization you can just use ADUC and choose "Exchange tasks" and move mailbox to the new server.
Copy and paste from the link below: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/822931?p=1
Move mailboxes to another server
If this Exchange Server 2003 computer hosts any mailboxes, these mailboxes must be moved to another server before you remove this Exchange 2003 computer. To do this, follow these steps:
Start Exchange System Manager on the Exchange 2003 source computer.
Double-click Servers , and then locate the server container where the mailboxes of the users are located. For example, if you want to move mailboxes from the default storage group and from the mailbox store, double-click First Storage Group , double-click Mailbox Store , and then click Mailboxes .
In the right pane, click the mailboxes that you want to move.
Right-click the selected users, and then click Exchange Tasks .
In the Exchange Task Wizard , click Next .
On the Available Tasks page, under Select a task to perform , click Move Mailbox , and then click Next .
On the Move Mailbox page, click Cross Administrative Group Move under Select the Type of Move , and then click Next .
On the Move Mailbox page, click the destination server that is in the Server list, click a mailbox store in the Mailbox Store list, and then click Next .
Configure how you want any corrupted messages that are found during the move to be handled, and then click Next two times.

Since both EX server are in the same Org, you can move mailboxes Active Directory Users and Computers. Make sure Exchange tools are installed.http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/Exchange_2003_Move_Mailbox_Wizard.htmlSanthosh Sivarajan | MCTS, MCSE (W2K3/W2K/NT4), MCSA (W2K3/W2K/MSG), CCNA, Network+ Houston, TX http://blogs.sivarajan.com/ http://publications.sivarajan.com/ This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.
