multihomed exchange server dns issue
Hi, i am running a multihomed exchange server 2003 with one internal and one external ip address. the exchange server is also the second DC running server2003. both DCs are running DNS AD integrated. we are having a DNS issue. both addresses are being registered in DNS as resolving to the exchange server name. when an outlook client attempts to resolve the exchange server, it resolves the external address first, but cannot connect to exchange using this addess. When you click retry in outlook, it tries the second (internal) address, and is able to access exchange. How can I configure it so that we don't have this issue. we have tried disabling round robin and deselecting the external nic to register with DNS. Can something be configured in exchange for it to connect using either IP? any help appreciated.thanks a lot, Deb

It sounds like it might requre a split-brain DNS to keep straight. Running Exchange on a DC is not a good idea.....

I agree, it's no good :)Attempt remove the "Register this connection in DNS" in Property tab of external interface. Than remove appropriate DNS enrtyhttp://okrylov.wordpress.com

register with dns has been deselcted on the external interface, and the entry removed from dns. it keeps reappearing in dns - i suspect when AD replicates. i also agree about not running exchange on a DC. this is an inherited situation - must look into changing it.thanks for your reply...any other thoughts appreciated.deb

yes, someone else also suggested the split-brain DNS, but this is not supported in microsoft DNS. is there something i can add to MS DNS to achieve this functionality?thanks for your help...Deb

If this server hold DC role, may be Netlogon restart required...http://okrylov.wordpress.com
