outbound Queue freeze
Hello
I have exchange 2010 SP1 on a vmware 4.1 esx.
Sometime (1 or 2 times per day) the outbound queue to our relay, freeze for 30mn or 1hour. nothing to do, restart transport service, restart relay ... mail don't go.
Then outbound queue empty itself and work fine.
when outbound freeze, we received all external mail.
In the time of a freeze i had logged on the excahnge server and make a telnet to the relay and send manually a mail, that work. I had delete and create the outbound connector.
thanks

From my experience that's caused by connectivity problems. Your server has trouble connecting to the destination server or smart host. Is your send connector configured to use a smart host? If so, you might want to reevaluate whether that
is necessary.Ed Crowley MVP "There are seldom good technological solutions to behavioral problems."

Hello,
yes my connector is configure to use a smarthost, but when the problem arrived, i had make a telnet directely from exchange server to smarthost and send manually mail with no problem.
How can i look if it is a connectivity problem ?
thanks

Hi,
Is this queue for a perticular domain ?. What have you used in smart host field "IP" or FQDN of hostname, try to use IP address in place of host name here and have a try..
Stop any A/V service for some time on server and then reproduce this issue. Had you reboot server since you have encounter this.
If still no luck then enable protocol logging on Transport service and share log with us.
Enable protocol logging on a Send Connector::

First, I find it odd that your smart host won't accept an EHLO command. If all your outbound mail is going to a smart host and that smart host is causing you a delay, then I suggest that your problem is due to the smart host.Ed Crowley MVP "There are seldom good technological solutions to behavioral problems."

It doesn't advertise "ESMTP" in the 220 banner so it not accepting the
EHLO isn't a surprise.

It's never completing the DATA portion of the conversation. It could
be something like a MTU size mismatch causing packet fragmentation,
but that's just a wild guess.

Thank you for reply, how can i see if the cause is a packet fragmentation ?

A simple, but not definitive, test would be "ping <ip-address> -l 1472
-f". If it doesn't fail then the route doesn't contain any odd-sized
MTUs or devices that add data to a full-size packet.

Hi,
Have you tried to create a new send connector to check the result? Does the issue occur when the message includes certain sender and reception or it occurs occasionally?
At this stage, I suggest you create another Send connector and reproduce the symptom. If the issue persists, I suggest you
capture a netmon trance for research:
[Netmon]
==========
1) Please download netmon tool at below link and install it on the Exchange server.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=983b941d-06cb-4658-b7f6-3088333d062f
2) Launch Microsoft Network Monitor 3.4, click File -> New -> Capture. On the right panel, click “Select Networks” tab, and check the VPN connection.
Click “Tools”->”Options”. increase the temporary capture file size to at least 100MB. Then click “Capture”->”start”.
Note: Click Capture just before we reproduce the problem. Otherwise, the NetMon log may not capture the required information because we limit the buffer size to 100M.
3) Please reproduce the issue. Let me know the detailed time when the issue happens and the name of the problematic DC it access.
4) Switch back to Network Monitor, click “Capture” -> “Stop”, click “File” -> “Save As” to save it to a .cap file. Send the log file to
me and I will be glad to assist you to analyze it.
Thanks.

As I said, it was just a wild guess.
Now it's time for a network monitor. Wireshark works pretty well. Or
you can use NetMon.
