remove CAS/HT that no longer physically exist
Hello,I have an Exchange 2007 environment (RU7) that is the second itteration of being built and unfortunately I have some lingering CAS/HT servers in the org, that no longer physically exist. Is there some way to remove these systems? Every technet article I look at starts with "Log on to the server from which you want to remove Exchange 2007 server roles." Since the servers don't exist, I can't do this. (see everything below http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa998193.aspx)--Gene

Hey Gene,
Actually Exchange 2007 requires to remove properly and manual remove is not supported as we used to remove Exchange 2003.

Exchange 2007 is removed differently from earlier versions of Exchange Server. You cannot manually remove Exchange 2007 from a computer. The only supported ways to remove Exchange 2007 are to use Add or Remove Programs or to use the Setup program on the Exchange 2007 CD to remove Exchange 2007 and to remove the Exchange 2007 object from Active Directory.

You can recover Exchange 2007 dead server with /RecoverServer setup switch on temporary server and remove it porperly from Add/Remove Program.

So if I setup an Exchange 2007 HT/CAS server (server HC1) in an Exchange environment ,with2 mailbox servers (mb1, mb2), 2 CAS servers (cas1, cas2) and two HT servers (ht1, ht2), and then formatted server HC1 I couldn't remove it from the Exchange 2007 organization from any of the other 7 Exchange servers. It would just sit there complaining that the system couldn't be reached?

Yes, because when you format the server without uninstall, references of that server will be still there in AD database at many place while proper uninstallation of Exchange Server from Add/Remove Program, before formatting server, will remove the references from AD properly...
Now when you recover Exchange server with /recoverserver switch on temporary server, it links back the references to temporary server and when you remove it properly from add/remove program, it will remove all reference properly and make a clean uninstall and EMS/EMC will not complain... :)Amit Tank | MVP Exchange Server | MCITP: EMA | MCSA: M | http://ExchangeShare.WordPress.com
