/removeorg switch to remove AD entries for Exchange 2003
So I have been given the task of removing every little tidbit of info for exchange 2003 and 2010 on AD, so I can recreate a new exch 2010 environment. Exchange Server 2003 is dead. Exchange 2010 is up and running, but 2003 was the bridgehead and now email will not flow from 2010. Even if I could fix that, the exchange 2010 is woefully small as far as resources are concerned. I want to remove every vestige of exchange 20XX and start again with a more robust server. I saw a forum entry on another website that said to use the /removeorg switch. I have been able to find next to nothing on this option. Can someone point me to the best way to remove everything exchange? If you have used /removeorg switch, what are the ramifications?

It cleans out your exchange configuration container in AD, remove exchange attributes from any mail enabled objects etc. Ramifications? As long as you don't have any mail enabled users none. Presently we installed icewarp to establish some form of email. but it is so fickle and full of bugs, instead of spending the time to prep the domain for a reinstall of exchange, I am troubleshooting little outlook issues all day. Why the IT director just didnt purchase office 365 I dont know. If the exch 2003 server (it was the only one) went offline and never came back, would there still be any mail enabled users left. My mailbox had been moved to the exch2010 server to test mailflow, but since the 2003 server died I cant really send emails from exch 2010 anymore. I am assuming that it was the bridgehead, but truly had only been at the company a week when the server died. So at this point, the best practice would be to use the removeorg switch? What about removing the exchange 2010 stuff?

Depends, do you intend to keep the 2010 server alive? If so then you cant do the remove org. But if you want to just completely start from scratch than yes. You mentioned you moved your mailbox to 2010 so your contents are there? Make sure you back up any mail items to pst if you do so.James Chong MCITP | EA | EMA; MCSE | M+, S+ Security+, Project+, ITIL msexchangetips.blogspot.com
