I have a server runnning exchange 2003 that I have configured to recieve mail from the internet, but I can not figure out how to get it to send out. I tried messing with the SMTP Connector and still nothhing. I either get a boune back saying the connection was refused, or it gets caught in the queue saying there is an internal dns error. can some one tell mee what I am doing wrong?

Hi, Please let me know which the queue did the message stay. Whether the MX records are available in the DNS? And check whether any available information in the Event log. when the message did stay in the queue it was in the SMTP connector queue, and all the necessary MX records are in DNS, however I can recieve mail from the net,, I just can not send mail out. there are no helpful errors in the logs. would seting a smarthost help? if so who should I put as the smarthost? I only have the one exchange server.

Hi, Now I suggest we remove the SMTP connector from ESM. Then test whether we can send the email by means of SMTP Virtual Server directly without the connector. What about the Message Tracking log? Can you send it to me in order to find the possible cause on this issue? Regarding the event log, maybe the level of the MSExchangeTransport is low, we need to set all the services under MSExchangeTransport to Maximum. messages are in, they say "An internal DNS error caused a failure to find the remote server" in the box that says additional queue information. I have read up on this, asked co-workers who know more about exchange and I still can not figure this out, I hope you can help.

Hi, I would like to confirm whether you configured external DSN server or SmartHost in SMTP VS. Whether any firewall placed in front of the Exchange server? If exists, it will block the communication in the 53 port between Exchange server and DNS. This issue may also occur if you have deployed several IP address in DNS settings. I do not have smarthosts configured, and if my router was blocking DNS wouldn't I not be able to access the net? I do not have any DNS settings configured, do I need them and what and where do I set them? also do I need two NIC cards to do what I am trying to accomplish here?

Hi, If no other IP address configured in DNS, please just ignore it. Thats no relation with the current issue. Now please run nslookup q=mx yahoo.com command to check the outcome. Click Start, click Run, input cmd and press Enter. In the command prompt, input the above command. What the result do you receive? Can we get the corresponding MX record? Please let me know. But when I type telnet smtp1.arin.net 25 I get 220 smtp1.arin.net ESMTP Postfix. and does this not mean port 25 is not blocked for outgoing traffic? also I use my router for DNS, should I be using my own server? if it matters I am using verizon FIOS.

Hi, Obviously, the MX record of the yahoo.com could not be found via the DNS. This indicates that the Exchange is using the internal server to send the email. Currently, I suggest we configure the external DNS in SMTP VS. Open ESM, locate Default SMTP Virtual Server, right click it, select Properties, in the Delivery tab, click Advanced button, click Configure button, please add the external DSN which is provided by ISP. ok, wheb I do this I get a result displaying the MX records. but when I try to send a test message to yahoo and one to hotmail, it creates 2 entries in the queue list, 1 for each. the one for hotmail says "The connection was dropped by the remote host." and the one for yahoo says"A SMTP protocal error has occured" DNS servers obtained from http://www.dnsserverlist.org/

Hi, I suspect the server's IP was on a black list. Please check whether the IP addresses of your Exchange server are blacklisted by any of the RBLs as indicated by www.dnsstuff.com Thanks Allen
