2008 Memory Usage vs. Windows 2003
Is it normal to see almost twice the amount of memory being used when viewing task manager in windows 2008 vs. 2003? For instance on a windows 2008 wsus server that is servicing about 300 nodes the memory usage with 1024mb assigned (VM on esx 3.5) is around 900mb intask manager. On a windows 2003 server with the identical configuration (including software, etc) hovers at around 250mb in task manager. I can even get away with easily running my 2003 installs with 512mb allocated and the performance is still great. So my biggest question here is, is this by design that 2008 will allocate more memory into a static mapping state then 2003 for performance reasons or is the overhead of 2008 really that much higher? This is just one example of where I see 2008 using twice or even three and four times the memory that 2003 does, in task manager at least.
Thanks
