Authentication error
I am running windows server 2003 and it connects to the internet using a Thomson Speedtouch USB modem. Thereis no problem with the internet connection. To connect you double click the icon on the desktop and the username and password is stored in the dialog box and so connection to the internet is automatic..
What i am looking to do is for the server to remain connected to the internet when i log off and for clients to access the internet through the server. This is also a mail server and so it needs this constant connection to receive mail.
The help i received was the following. Use the resource kit tools to add a service. Edit the registry to link the service to the executable c:\program files\thomson\speedtouch\stdialup.exe. We select the service to start automatically. None of this was a problem and in fact the service started with no reported errors in event viewer. The problem was after restarting the computer. In fact i didn't realise there was a problem. i checked the service and it was running, and so i just opened IE thinking there would be no problem, but....The page that loaded was mostly blank, except for the words "Authentication Error!" written in red and centred on the top line. When i checked event viewer there was an error, although the service still said it was running, and the error is as follows
Event ID: 20111A Demand Dial connection to the remote interface Tesco Broadband Coonection on port PPPoE7-0 was successfully initiated but failed to complete successfully because of the following error: The remote computer did not respond. For further assistance, click More Info or search Help and Support Center for this error number.
For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
On discussing it with a friend, he said that it was failing because the username & password that i would normally type in, is not being passed over to the ISP for authentication. He suggested i needed some sort of script or use informatiion stored in the registry to help with the connection, but he wasn't able to be specific enough to help me. Does anyone have a script (and tell me how to implement it please). Does anyone know how to keep this server permanantly connected to the internet, even when no one is logged on.Thank-you in advance

Hi David-
Have you contacted your ISP to see if this is a supported scenario? Also, have you considered getting a broadband router (like a NetGear or Linksys device) that supports PPPoE authentication? Not sure if this is a 100% relevant, but you could pass the task on to the router/switch which means your network will always be connected.
Thanks,Ian
