Browing in subnets
I have a WAN using a domain with 9 subnets. The PDC is on a Windows 2003 in subnet 0, all clients are either xp or win 7. Subnet 4 does not show in the browse list and within subnet 4 only those machine are visible. the BPDC is located in subnet 4 and is a windows 2008r2 server. On the Win 7 and win2008 systems, network and sharing have been turned on. I have been looking for information on how to correct this issue for a few days and when I run browstat getmaster I am returned that it is not a recognized command. I have attempted to run it from win xp, win7 win2003 and win2008 all return the same thing. I do not have a wins server setup in this environment. I can map a drive outside to a system outside of subnet 4 using the netbios name, and I can map a drive to any computers in subnet 4 from other subnets. I just can not see subnet 4 in the network list of computers, and can not see the other subnets within subnet 4. It has worked well for over 6 years until a few days ago. We have not added or changed any equipment within the domain. I need some help trying to determine why subnet 4 is not browsing outside of it self and is not showing in the other subnets. You've said that the PDC (primary domain controller) is on Windows 2003 OS with XP and Win7 clients. The BPDC (backup primary domain controller?) is on a Windows 2008 R2. I belive the notion of Primary Domain Controller and Backup Domain Controller are relevant to Windows NT operating systems. From Windows 2000 and until today's versions there is only a PDC emulator and doesj just that. It emulates a PDC if you have Windows NT in your enviroment. The PDC emulator is also responible for other things such as time sync in a domain, recieves password change notifications, etc. According to MS the browstat tool is available for Windows Server 2003 but i think its part of a support tools package for XP only (2003) which you can download here. From what I recall in a domain enviroment the PDC emulator holds the master browser role and I assume all workstations are in the domain. I remember using a script to quickly determine the master browser. I think I got it from here. There is also a registry setting in all windows os that determine the master browser. Usually master browser conflicts appear in event logs but have a look also on the event logs on the PDC emulator. To configure a registry setting to multiple computers you can use Group Policy. The registry setting I am talking about is detailed here. Also have a look at common browser issues in this MS article. Hope it helps.MCTS - Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question.
