DNS Server Timeout
I now have two clients with the same (or very close) DNS issue. In both situation DNS has successfully been working for years and now in the last 6 months certain lookups will not resolve, a simple restart of the DNS service on the server resolves the issue. The Event logs show no signs of any error. So I am trying to resolve the situation. One DNS is on a Small Business Server 2003, the other is a standard windows server 2003, and both are PDC's. The situation is random and not all lookups time out. For example dozens of people are borwsing the web and one will try to check their POP mail but the address will not resolve. They can still browse the interenet but for some reason this one particular address will not resolve. When this occurs it occurs for the entire domain, restarting the DNS on the DNS server instantly fixes the problem. In both cases the DNS servers do not use DNS forwarders, but use root servers. I could reall use some help to resolve this issue.

Hello What type of DNS are you using. AD integrated? Sometime maybe your dns server is having problem contacting the forwarders on your forwarders list..If this happens try to ping or resolve those forwarders and see if any issuesIsaac Oben MCITP:EA, MCSE

It is AD integrated, and again it does not use forwarders, it uses roots

Hello, all domain machines use only the domain DNS server(s) as preferred and secondary on the NIC? Or are also external server ip addresses or a router with DNS functionality added? Did you try to update root hints from an ISP?Best regards Meinolf Weber Disclaimer: This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties or guarantees , and confers no rights.

Don't know why that would do any good when restarting the DNS service clears up the problem.
