DNS on external NIC - ISA 2006
I'm going to use ISA 2006 SP1 with an IP address (etc.) on the external NIC provided dynamically by the DHCP of my ISP. In Dr. Tom Shinder's "ISA Server 2006 Migration Guide", I read, on page 135 that no DNS server address should be entered on the external NIC. But if I am receiving DNS settings from the ISP, how could I prevent that? Note: if I select manual settings for DNS in TCP/IP properties of the external NIC, I have to enter something. --- Also, does the server hosting ISA need to be connected to the Internet for installation? I'm concerned that connecting it to the Internet before (B4) installing ISA would be a security risk (no firewall). * Thanks in advance! Please mark as helpful if you find my contribution useful or as an answer if it does answer your question. just put there the same DNS IP addresses as you configure on the internal NIC. sure, you do not need to have the machine connected during installation. o.

Hello Aiden, Can you confirm that solution then? I tried to get a response from Dr. Shinder on his forum but no reply since I posted several days ago (his ISA server forum does not seem to active anymore). OK, I found the answer. If the external NIC is obtaining its IP address from the DHCP server of the ISP, you just let DHCP assign whatever IP address(es) it wants. No need to do anything then on the external NIC. Looks like we can also delete any DNS address on the NIC with NETSH: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc731521%28WS.10%29.aspx#BKMK_deletednsserver This may be preferable - if you have a DNS infrastructure internally. Please mark as helpful if you find my contribution useful or as an answer if it does answer your question.
