Difference in search results when search PDF

Hi,

We see that when search for example the word "xxx" at the same document library which contain PDF files - search results looks different for different files.

Some search results include: title, short text from file, URL, and the text "xxx" is bold, while in other results the text is no bold and the search result includes only title and URL (no short text from the file).

Why does it happen? does it belong to the way the PDF file was created or some

Hi Keren tsur,

By default, the search results are displayed differently so that you can easily differentiate between the different types of search results

To display search results differently like this, search results are sorted into result types. A result type is a classification of a search result. For example, if a search result is found in a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation, the search result belongs to the Microsoft PowerPoint result type. If a search result is found in a PDF file, the search result belongs to the PDF result type.

In a SharePoint Search Center, search results are displayed in a Search Results Web Part. To control how the search results are displayed, two types of display templates are used:

  1. The item display template controls how the information in the body of the Search Results Web Part is displayed.
  2. The hover panel display template controls how the information in the hover panel is displayed.

Check this msdn article to change the result set as per your need.

Hi Krishana,

We are totally awear to that but here the problem is regarding PDF files only - some PDF files are displayed in one way while other PDF files are displayes in a different way. No customization in the Result Types settings was done.

If you look at the PDF's in a structual way and look at metadata in them...do you see any difference on those who work and those who doesn't?

It looks strange in your case but you can modify the PDF layout which is a bit more advanced is to actually modify the PDF Flyout Design Template. You do this by going to Site Settings > Design Manager then choose 5. Edit Display Templates. Locate the PDF Flyout item by filtering on the Target Control Type column and use SearchHoverPanel, then scroll down to PDF Hover Panel. To modify the PDF Hover Panel, use the Word Hover Panel as a template. Im not going in to all the details on how to modify the actual HTML file (see my similar post on how to achieve this here). But once youve modified it, make sure to save it to the gallery so the JS file is generated, and publish it. Now (if you made the correct updates) you will have Custom Search Previews for PDF documents.

Hi,

Now it seems that we do see the search result ok (title, short text from file, the search text in bold etc.) - but we have a strange behavior - in the first page of search results it doesn't behave that way (the result looks as item result and not pdf result type)

Hi Keren,

As you know display Templates decide how the result should be shown and how the fly-out of the result should look like. For Office documents, when SharePoint 2013 is connected to a WAC farm, SharePoint displays inline previews which you can use to skim through the results really quick. For PDF this is not the case not even if you use a WAC farm with the March 2013 update (even though the WOPI binding supports the interactivepreview action). This is a sample on how a PDF document could look like in SharePoint 2013 Search
