Domain Controller Time Server
I have about 5 domain controller, two in our main location and 3 addtional ones in three branch offices. I set my domain controller to use an internet ntp server. When I do a net time on our workstations and member servers it it says current time but points to a domain controller that is in a branch office location that is not running any FSMO roles. My PDC Emulator is running in our main office and you would think the workstations and member servers and AD servers would grab the time from that PDC Emulator server but it is not. How do you correct this as everytime I do a net time /setsntp:PDC Emulator server then when I do a net time it still shows the branch office server.

Hello, I have about 5 domain controller, two in our main location and 3 addtional ones in three branch offices. I set my domain controller to use an internet ntp server. it is recommended to configure your PDC Emulator to sync time with a public NTP server and let clients computers / domain servers use the PDC Emulator to sync time. You have to set the sync type to NT5DS for DCs other than the PDC: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb490845.aspx More here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc784800(WS.10).aspx This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties or guarantees , and confers no rights. Hi, Please make sure that the DC in the branch office is not a reliable time source with the command: W32tm /config /reliable:no /update. As an alternative to configuring the PDC emulator, you can configure a different domain controller in the forest root domain to synchronize time from a reliable time source. If there is such a domain controller in the forest root domain, the PDC emulator no longer advertises as a reliable time source. For more information, please refer to the following Microsoft TechNet article: Configure the Time Source for the Forest http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc794937(WS.10).aspx Please also refer to the following Microsoft KB article for how to set the PDC as an authoritative time server: How to configure an authoritative time server in Windows Server http://support.microsoft.com/kb/816042 Regards, Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Hello, net time is old fashioned and replaced with w32tm command line tool. Also ONLY the DCs sync with the DC having the PDCEmulator FSMO, all other domain members sync with an available DC. http://msmvps.com/blogs/mweber/archive/2010/06/27/time-configuration-in-a-windows-domain.aspxBest regards Meinolf Weber Disclaimer: This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties or guarantees , and confers no rights.
