Failed to paste in CMD window
Hi,Since several days before, I've met a weird thing with my CMD window on my Windows 2008 X64 box: when I copied something in any other application (like Notepad), I can't paste them in the CMD window! This used to work but suddenly failed in these days.I tried to restart OS but it still didn't work. The interesting thing is: if I copy something in the CMD window itself, it can be pasted without problem; however, if I then copy something in other app and try to paste in CMD, there is NOTHING pasted ( it didn't paste the text I just copied in itself, neither).Any idea what happened? How can I solve this?-Victor

Hi Victor, This issue can be caused by third-party programs such as anti-virus programs. I suggest trying a Clean Boot to test the issue. Clean Boot ======== 1. Click Start, type "MSCONFIG" (without the quotations) in the Search Bar and Press "Enter" to start the System Configuration Utility. Note: Please click Continue if the "User Account Control" window pops up. 2. Click the "Services" tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click "Disable All" (if it is not gray). 3. Click the "Startup" tab, click "Disable All" and click "OK". 4. Restart the computer and test the issue. Note: Clean Boot is a troubleshooting step. If some programs have been disabled, we can re-enable them later. If you see the System Configuration Utility, check the box of "Don't show this message" and then click "OK". Please test this issue in the Clean Boot environment. If the issue disappears, we can use a 50/50 approach to quickly narrow down which entry is causing the issue. If the issue persists, please update your anti-virus program and perform a complete virus scan. You can also test this issue in other accounts. Please let me know the result. Tim Quan - MSFT

No virus found. Have no idea why it happened. For now I have to use workaround: paste long information in a batch file and use it in CMD.

Hi Victor, Thank you for the reply. Now I suggest creating a new user account to test the issue. Whats the result? You can also turn off UAC to test the result. Control Panel -> User Accounts -> Turn User Account Control on or off -> uncheck the box before Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer. When copying and pasting data from applications to Command Prompt, please confirm if you can paste it to other places rather than Command Prompt. When pasting it into Command Prompt, please right-click the cursor and click Paste. I look forward to hearing from you. Tim Quan - MSFT

Hi Victor, Thank you for the reply. This issue seems to be related to permission. Now I suggest running cmd as administrator to test the result. Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt and click Run as administrator. Cmd will be opened. Please check whether we can copy and paste now. If so, I am afraid that you do not have enough privileges to copy data from other applications to cmd without elevated permissions. I suggest running cmd as administrator to workaround this issue. In fact, many commands can only work when we run cmd as administrator in Windows Vista/Server 2008. Therefore, I suggest always running cmd as administrator. Hope it helps. Tim Quan - MSFT

Tim: Did you try pasting into an admin command prompt? If it is not from a console window (command prompt, powershell prompt), then you cannot paste into a command prompt or powershell window regardless of whether it was run as admin, or the non-console program was running as admin. The non-answer that is marked as "Answer" is not an answer. There is a problem that makes console windows MUCH LESS usable.

This should be a Windows 2008 bug, because everything *used to* work but suddenly broke. I post this issue here with hope that product team can help to investigate the root cause and finally solve it.

I am running into this problem on Windows Vista. I ran into this problem without any service pack installed. I upgraded to SP1 and subsequently to SP2, but the issue is still present. This was working for me fine until 2-3 weeks back. So farmy suspicions were towardsWindows update in that some updates may be responsible for this. But by following this thread, it seems like the issue was reported by Victor Li in October 2008. So, this may not be a problem with recent Windows updates after all.I have 100% repro if someone is willing to debug my machine (available internally to Microsoft). I do not know why/how the machine went into this state.Regards,Daud Howlader - MSFT

HI all, exactly the same problem starting some days ago.Vista SP2. The only changes I can remeber, were the latest updates.I tried with and without "Quick Edit Mode"I tried with Admin command prompt. What is working:When I mark some text that I have typed inte the CMD box (i.e. ">dir" ), then I can copy and paste that text (i.e.: ">dirdirdir" ). But I'm not able to put any text into the CMD box that is comming from another application. And I'm able to mark and copy text from the CMD box to another application (i.e. into notepad)Best regardsJuergenPS: I've tried another account on the same notebook => same problem. So it seems to be machine related.

Some more info ...If I run notepad.exe as System (the process also has System Mandatory Level integrity level), I can cut or copy from there to any command prompt (one running as me, me as admin or to a command prompt running as system). Not sure if it is the integrity level or the system user that is allowing copy and paste to succeed.
