Hello,

I'm upgrading in place Windows 2003 R2 to Windows 2008 R2 and upgrades rolls back on it's own with no indication for reasoning. 

Below is setuterr.log which is full of errors but I can not figure out which specific one is curlpit. Any ideas?

Most probably these kind of errors pop up if the drivers are not compatible. Do you find any .dmp files under folder C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources ? If so open it with debugger and check for the affected .sys file name.

Check the DVD media, or try a different media.

There are no DMP files under C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources. This is virtual machine and it's upgraded via downloaded ISO file, so I doubt issue with media.

I like to add that if that machine is Domain controller in place upgrades are NOT recommended.

Which server roles and services run on this machine?

This is web server. It's a virtualized machine on Vmware so all hardware is supported both on Windows 2003 and Windows 2008.

Yes, I tried with different ISO file and it's the same issue. I don't have much option but to do inplace upgrade becouse of legacy app components on this servers. I really need to find out why it's failing.

It's straight Windows 2003x64 Standard to 2008R2 standarad. Again it's fails after reboot and almost all stuff being down (like 78% into upgrade).

Here are something to double check, just in case you have not done them yet.

1.  In the Setup Wizard, after you have selected the Upgrade option, you are presented with a dialog box that includes a link to a Compatibility Report. Please go through this wizard and double check the compatibility report.

2. On this virtual machine, how large is the C: drive? How much remaining space is there in the C: drive (assuming C is the system drive)?

3. Regarding the installation source (iso), a simple test is to build a new Virtual Machine (Clean Install) using this media, does the installation work?

4. According to the description, you want an upgrade because of the legacy app components. For these applications, do you have the installation source? To ensure they work in Windows 2008R2, I suggest, either check with the manufacturer to see if it is compatible with 2008 R2, or, build a new Windows Server 2008 R2 test VM and install the application on it to see if the application works.

If the application does not work in 2008 R2 by nature, then upgrading the server to 2008 R2 would not bring any benefit here.

2. C drive is 50 GB and 30 GB is free out of it

3. Yes installation works as well upgrades of other machines worked as well

4. We don't have installation source for old application neither their configuration. If we would have then we would use fresh install obviously. The only reason we need in place upgrade becouse we lack those.

We need to find out why it fails based on logs really.

I think there are other files you may need to look at for cause.
