LLMNR
Hello everyone, I just signed up to take advantage of TechNet that offers great benefits, including questions to more experienced than me. I'm attending the course MCITP and am currently struggling exam 70-642. Let me ask a question about LLMNR name resolution .. I have two virtual machines with Srv2008R2, I have no DNS installed, and I'm putting into practice the name resolution through LLMNR Protocol. Long story short, I noticed the first Server (Dcsrv1) (with LLMNR Enabled and the Disable Netbios) can ping (ping Boston) the second server (Boston) even if the server Boston I have disabled the IPV6 (by clearing the check ) (which means that I disabled the prot LLMNR) and also the Netbios. I wonder .. given that Boston has disabled LLMNR Server and NetBIOS, so how can respond to LLMNR queries sent by the Server Dcsrv1? Why Dcsrv1 able to obtain the IPv4 address? In general, any network activity is carried out by Active protocols on both hosts who want to communicate or am I wrong?

Hi, Thank you for your post. 1. LLMNR could just be disabled via GP or registry key. 2. LLMNR query messages and listen messages over both IPv6 and IPv4. 3. So, the two servers both with LLMNR enabled and Boston response with IPv4 due to IPv6 disabled. Link-Local Multicast Name Resolution 70-642 - LLMNR and IPv4 If there are more inquiries on this issue, please feel free to let us know. RegardsRick Tan TechNet Community Support
