Moving Roaming Profile Folders - Server 2003
I have a Windows 2003 R2 server with XP SP3 workstations and need to move the roaming profiles folder from the drive partition it's on now to another on the same server. The roaming profiles within were created using the Profile Path property of each user in Active Directory. I also use this in conjunction with folder redirection of My Documents (set in group policy) In moving a test account I had to take ownership to cut and paste it to its new location, but no matter how it seems I configure permissions, the user is denied access to the profile (path was also changed in their AD account properties). But if I move the folder back to its original container, it starts roaming again, which leads me to believe I have the correct permissions set, but there is some sort of "hook" in the user's roaming profile data that always wants to point back to the folder it was originally created in. I can get user's folder redirection to change to a new location, but so far, no luck with their roaming profile folder. Any advice on this? From much searching on this subject, there seems to be no easy way, and much suggestions of complex, hard to comprehend scripts. My fear is I don't want to damage or wreck any of the user data during the move. Thanks much for any tips or advice.

You could try the User State Migration Tool: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=799ab28c-691b-4b36-b7ad-6c604be4c595&displaylang=en http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc722032(WS.10).aspx http://blogs.technet.com/b/usmt/

Thank you for the tip. My network operates 24/7 with only narrow windows of opportunity for major maintenance or adjustment operations so when I get that time available I will try this an report back. I did notice on the requirements the "source and destination operating system match the requirements listed above", which does not include Server 2003. Can this still be used to go from Server 2003 to Server 2003? Thanks again.

Yea after brief research it looks like Server 2003 isn't supported. Are you aware of a utility that performs a similar functionality and supports 2003? Alternately, would I be able to install this on an XP domain member, and target the source share on the Windows Server and move it to the new location on the same server? (moving it to the same server, just on a different disk partition). Thanks

This problem may occur if Windows Server 2003 checks the ownership of roaming profile folder. Please try the suggestions in the following article: Windows Server 2003 checks for pre-created roaming profile folders when you make a roaming user profile http://support.microsoft.com/kb/327259 Thanks.
