New Win2008 R2 Set Up Help
Hi everyone,
Well I'll try to keep it short and simple, I'm just a regular PC tech that works in a small business, I was recently task with building a file sharing server for the business (Monday morning). Today (Thursday morning) I was just given another task on redefining the
server currently in progress of setting up. The new server is going to host win2008 R2 and a special trucking software. The trucking software requires the following to run:
1 server for IIS (Web Server) w/2GB RAM, 300 GB Storage, GHz processor and 32 bit OS
1 server for terminal services w/2GB RAM and 300 GB Storage and GHz processor
I know win server 2008 R2 has IIS web services and terminal service, my question is can I run the software in one server (main server with win server 2008) and create the 2 servers requested by the software within the same server
,or do I have to build 2 separate to satisfy the requirements of the trucking software?
The way I look at it is to build one server for everything described below:
Drive C: run OS with a 200GB partition
Drive D: Run 32 bit hyper-V to accommodate IIS Server with 300GB storage 2GB RAM and 2 Ghz processor
Drive E: Run terminal service with 2GB RAM, 300GB Storage partition
Does that sound correct or do I build the other 2 separate severs?
Thanks all help with this will be appreciated since I'm just a PC Tech not a server guru.

Hello,
There are a few other factors you need to address also like:
Licensing - Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard comes with 1 virtual license for a VM. Consult if you can downgrade that from 2008R2 (x64) to 2008 (x86). More Here:http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/us/downgrade-rights.aspx
Storage requirements - You need 300GBx2 plus OS and additional space. I recommend at least 2 disks of 1 TB configured in RAID 1 (mirror).
RAM requirements - 4GB required, you could get by with that but depends on how much load the server is going to take? How many simultaneous connections will there be at peak hours? Try to get as much RAM as you can.
Remote Desktop CAL's - If you want simultaneous RDP connections to the App, consider the costs for purchasing the CALs required. There are User CALs and Machine CALs:http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc753650.aspx ;
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee891291(v=ws.10)
Make sure you have a capable quad core processor or something similar for good performance.

Hi Marius and thanks for the reply.
Here is the set up for the server I'm about to configured:
1. ASUS RS100 1U Slim Server w/raid protection
2. Xenon E-3 1230 Sandy Bridge 3.2 ghz quad core
3. 16 GB DDR3 PC 1333
4. Win Server 2008 R2 standard 1 sever 10 CAL (6 clients in office)
5. 2 TB storage
6. Trying to reduce cost as much as possible. I'm at 1,895.00 so far.
With this set up Am I able to run win server 2008 R2 standard and do the partitions as I mentioned above on the same server or do I have to build 2 more separate servers for the trucking software?
If possible to keep everything in one server can I run Hyper V in 32 bit mode to satisfy IIS requirements of trucking software or just run VM ware with a 32 bit OS to satisfy it?

Look like this server exceeds the requirements by far. So my guess is everything will run smooth. In this server (HyperV) you can virtualize the 2 servers (as best practices recommends), for the web server you could use Windows server 2008 x86 Web Edition,
and for the TS you could use the standard edition 2008 R2.
* I had trouble using HyperV fetures for example, smart cards, hasp keys... You can connect it to the host machine but it is not available in the VM. I had to use 3rd party software for USB redirection. Be sure you don't need anything like that
*test out installing Virtual Box (free but running on a server OS i'm not sure it will still be considered free, check that out. ) it works ok.
*VMware - very good virtualization solution.
If you want to reduce cost and sacrifice efficiency, you could install the TS and app on the 2008 R2 host and on a VM 2008 x 86 the web server.
The problem is when you need to restart the TS you automatically restart the web server so... not really ok but depends on budget.
Another solution that you can use is Hyper V server 2008 R2. It is free:

Hope it helps.
