RRAS 2 Nics Network Discovery Issues
Iam running server 2008 standardas a router and file server for 4 computers.Everything works great, I havethe dhcp and wins servers running..The issue Iam having is on the network card that is attached to the internal network, itwas coming up with "unindentified network" which I would assume is because there were no gateway settings for theinternal network. After some research I ran across being abe to add the key: "*NdisDeviceType" in the registry to the right adapter and set it to 1. Thisstops windows from being able to identify the network. This appears to be only for annoyance purposes or appearances as it doesn't really seem to operate anydifferently other then it doesn't displaythis network card in the network and sharing app.Really what I was after was being able to define different firewall rules for the internal network versus the external network. After not being able to figure out how to do that, I just disabled the firewall on the internal network. Now the only way to get Network Discovery to work so that I can open my laptop and click on network (network neighborhood) and the server shows up is to enable network discovery which appears to enable it for the public network. I don't understand how this setting effects the internal network when the firewall is turned off for the internal network. So now I am thinking that I could just turn the firewall back on for the internal interface but then restrict the file sharing and other ports that I want to be internalto the local subnet under scope and remote ip address's. Is this the best way to accomplish what I am trying to do with the equipment I have.Obviously my number one concern is the ports open the internet and I am not concerned about the internal network.Casey
